First of all congratulations on your babies! Twins are a wonderful miracle, and a lot of hard work. I always used onesies for warmer days and baby pajamas. The way to remember how to dress your baby is if you would be at a comfortable temp in what they are wearing then they will be comfortable. This is important so you don't overdress them. Onesies are also good as a base layer for when you take those little bundles out in the freezing cold. Onesies are cute and in my opinion a necessity, because who really wants to dress screaming babies in elaborate outfits when a onesies is quicker and easier. Since you are a new mother I would recommend you read the What To Expect When You Are Expecting book and also find a good book on raising multiples. Good Luck to you.

You know, that is a good question..? Onesies are cute and is plenty clothing for a hot day. I never put them on under my sons clothes though, even in winter and the clasps never bothered him nor did he get irritated...thats why there a baby detergents. You dress your baby the way your dressed. If your wearing one layer of clothing, than dress your baby the same, and i dont usually wear more than one layer of clothing, besides my son was always a warm kid. You can always bring extra layers along to put on them if they do feel cold. Plus, if you just use the onesie and some shorts/pants...then you dont have a shirt getting all bunched up when you pick up your baby...guess thats a good purpose for a onesie....? Good luck and god bless you, your husband and babies.

It's funny the things you don't have any idea about and that then become second nature! I have a 15mo old, and your question made me smile so much thinking how unsure I was a few months ago and how much I'm still learning every day.
Onesies are great easy outfits for newborns on up. They can be used by themselves, or as undershirts and make great pajamas in the hotter months.
They are simply easier to use on a baby than plain t-shirts. They don't "ride up" on an infant who is rolling around on the ground. (Remember, they don't sit up for months, if you were laying down, your shirt would probably bunch up under your arms and get uncomfortable.) They can be used as an extra layer under fancier more grown up looking tops (like button front shirts), but remember not to overdress your baby. I've heard that a good rule of thumb is one more layer than what you are comfortable in, but just pay attention to the baby, you'll figure it out.
In my case, they work great at night when the baby isn't wearing pants b/c it keeps an inquisitive 15 mo old from seeing whether or not he can open his own diaper!

Best of luck to you and your hubby. Also, I'm not all that into reading parenting books, they tend to make me worry, but my pediatrician gave me a book that was put out by the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics). It was called Your Baby's First Year and it was a great resource for me. It had a lot of that stuff that you don't know you don't know until your confronted with a question at 3am. (How to take a temperature, when to call the doctor etc.)
You can find it on their website.

Onesies are the baby equivalent of a pair of gym shorts. You can usually put the baby in one when you are going to be at home, awake or asleep. When they are going to be in their car seats or carriers, it is usually better to change them into something with legs to prevent chafing from the straps. Do not put the baby in more layers than you would be comfortable in when it is hot outside. Heat rash comes on really quickly in little ones. Always carry a light blanket just in case you go inside somewhere cold, but do NOT drape it completely over the carrier like a tent.

The purpose of a onesie is convenience. Putting pants and a shirt (or a dress) on an infant is a pain in the you-know-where. It comes in very handy when it comes time to change the diaper.

My Aunt puts one on her little one under little sundresses that have no sleeves, because there is a whole modesty issue.
But you could always put them in a onesie and then put a cute pair of shorts on, thats cute, and they don't just come in ugly old plain white either!
It's also easier because my little cousin loves to pull her shirts up when there isn't a onesie! So it also helps her keep her belly covered and she can't pull it off!

When it's hot out all you need to put on your child is a onesie and when they are sitting around the house because they grow so fast when they are born and it's pointless to have to many outfits for them. It's cheaper just to get a few outfits for going to special occasions and have a bunch of onesies just for laying around.

I only used onesies in the winter...just as an extra layer. They just act as a t-shirt and the snaps are just for keeping the shirt from riding up. There's also a stage many kids go through when they rip off their diaper or in some cases, fish through their diapers! The snaps also prevent them from doing this.

It helps protect the baby from any clasps or fasteners on clothes that could irritate his skin. Besides, they are so cute. On a hot day, a onesie is clothing enough.

Well, I usually just put onesie's on in the fall and winter, but it has multi-purposes ecspecially for newborns:

1. Can protect their skin from any "itchy" clothes they may have
2. protects their clothes from poop stains- the poop will come through their diaper and onto their onesi's instead of their clothes. Onesie's has saved lots of laundry for me
3. keeps them a tiny bit warmer

I hope you get lots of onesie's at your baby shower!!!
