An uncle in-law was just diagnosed with this.
He can only drink a few ounces of water everyday. The food he is allowed to have looks like baby formula. Anything more than that and his liver can no longer handle it and he goes into toxic shock. Sweating, yellowed skin and eyes and a fever all happen within hours of him eating too much.
It isn't pleasant and hopefully his passing won't be too much more horrendous.
He is also very angry and depressed. He did this to himself and there is no way they can fix it. He isn't elligble for a transplant because the damage was caused by alcohol.
So if the person you know falls into the same boat expect lots of self-loathing and bitterness towards the medical teams. A person that is dying is going to be depressed regardless.
Good luck and best wishes.
