I really love science! The nervous system and brain fasinates me and I really like watching shows like House and ER. I always get in the "A" range in all my subjects and have never gotten lower than that (my lowest grade was an A- in math, all A+'s in science though). I just think it is really cool to be able to fix people and cut people open. And when I think about being a doctor, I always get a really cool feeling like being in the hospital and scrubbing in to get ready to operate. Could I be a neurosurgeon?

There is a lot to becoming a physican, even more to become a surgeon, and to become a neurosurgeon...yipes! Plan on giving up all thoughts of partying through college...med school is really tough to get into and even tougher to stay in. You will have to work at getting the best grades in your class in both your bachelor's degree, and in med school, so you can get into the residency program that will teach you to become a neurosurgeon. All in all, it will take you 10-15 years, from start of your bachelors, to becoming a neurosurgeon.
On a side note, real medicine is nothing like House, Grey's Anatomy, or to a lesser degree ER. I've heard it described as hours upon hours of sheer boredom followed by moments of sheer terror...there's a lot of mundane stuff in medicine, and it does get boring at times (lots of times). But there is nothing like saving a life, whether you are a paramedic or a neurosurgon. Go for it, follow your heart, but have backup plans in place just in case you don't get that neurosurgeon fellowship!
Good luck!

A surgeon is like an artist who works with his hands and has excellent coordination of the mind. He has an eye to find what he should be looking for and the ability to handle the most delicate and fine nerves. A neurosurgeon is like the top of the groove as he operates on areas like the brain and the spinal cord. If you are good with your hands, i.e if you can open up a knot in a thin thread with your bare hands and if your observation is excellent, you should pursue the career. But if you are clumsy with your hands, no matter how many A plusses you may have in academics, please do not try to become a surgeon even - leave aside being a neurosurgeon. Good luck.

Sure, if that is your dream I see no reason for you not to go for it! Keep your grades up and try to find ways to be well rounded. Med schools see a lot of applicants that have high GPA's, so having something unique to make yourself stand out will go a long ways to getting you accepted into a good school. Best of luck! You will have a satisfying career!

Plan on many years of no social life, tons of schooling, tuition $$$, hours upon hours of no sleep during your residency. And being dedicated 110% to your job. The positive outcome will be saving peoples lives and living a decent fulfilling life. Good luck & if you do get into it stick to it!!
