I can speak to you as a friend of someone in your situation. He and his wife believed some unorthodox beliefs and shared them with me and other close friends. These beliefs were/are such a strong part of their lives, affecting every area thereof, and so distant from what I believe that it was difficult to relate to them any longer. They are such good people but I felt like every time I saw them I was being bombarded with their version of The Truth. This made it difficult to maintain a friendship with them and unfortunately we no longer speak. However, the traverse would be true as well: my beliefs are reflected in every part of my life so perhaps all parties involved were left feeling uncomfortable.

You are each free to your own beliefs, and that is internal, so nobody can take it away from you.
If your beliefs don't jive with your family's beliefs, then just don't bring up religion around them. If you are invited to a Christian based event, such as a christening or wedding, don't refuse because of your own beliefs, just celebrate them for theirs.

My wife and I are Catholic. My mother is Evangelical. She believes in Creationism, but we believe evolution is the most likely case. So, we DO discuss it.
Also, what exactly is unorthodox?

If you truly beieve that your beliefs are right then why not defend them? Why do you have to pretend to be something that you are not?

So -- what you are saying is that you aren't willing to stand up for your beliefs? Is that right? And you want me to condone that?
