Clean well with white wine vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar will dissolve the rust.
Make sure you rinse kettle thoroughly before re-using.

Put a couple tablespoons of CLR *calcium, lime, rust remover* in the kettle with hot water. Let it sit and clean it out with soapy water when you've finished.

you can't buy a normal kettle made of plastic otherwise it would melt. you can buy an electric one. you can't remove rust, just buy a stainless steel one! It will last for ages

There's stuff at the grocery store called CLR and it removes calcium deposits, lime deposits and rust.
You want to wash it really well after you've used it, but it does work.
