Because in the western world americans on the whole are some of the most poorly educated individuals. While good schools exist, for the most part to an outsider they often seem sub-standerd. They also insist on perpetuating their problem by keeping schools tied to religion - teaching creationalism in science etc.
The top school for US politicians is an extreemly religious one that teaches Strata were caused by the great flood. When those people are making the laws, is it any wonder that the country follows suit?
It most likely lies in the early history of the country, using the bible as a justification for many of their behavours, laws, and their devine rights as christians to invade. People hang on to that kind of thing. Teach the kids.
Teach the teachers.
Fanatisism seems to evarate when schools teach many ways of thinking or poeple have the opertunity to go and look at these other ways, properly think about them. But mosty, people from the US do not travel outside of the US - even outside of their state - and do not learn about anything besides christianity and at best a loose grip of science. I beleive there's a current shortage of science teachers within the US? Or possibly that's jsut in a few states.
...
Anyway, I beleive the problem lies in schools.
I've met so many intelligent americans though, I don't think it's as bad as everyone else thinks. Just bad.

Look at the Middle East right now and then you can see who is so far over the top. It's the muslim p*gs of the earth. Religion is nothing in america compared to all of the uneducated, religious extremist countries of the world. I think burning the American flag is a way for ignorant homosexuals to vent.

I'm not sure that they do. It is way too general of a statement. There are so many different types of people in America that follow many different religions. Some that don't follow any religion. Why not talk to a few Americans and find out how they really feel.

Why do Americans go so far over the top when it comes to:
food portions in restaurants
desire for big powerful car engines
opinions about anything and everything
safety issues (the government as nanny)
making laws (which usually already exist) when one accident
occurs
personal independence and freedom, even when it's
dangerous to their health (like riding motorbikes without
helmets)
children (treating them with adult privileges when they have
not yet developed adult thinking or sense of responsibility)
Shall I go on? The first part of the question seems to beg the answer ... it's the national character.

This is not an American thing solely. Does people who will kill themselves ( and take as may with them as they can in hopes of getting virgins in Heaven ring any bells?
I think religion in general is the cause of much of the worlds problems. No, I am not an atheist. I think people use their "religion" as an excuse to do terrible things, all the while ignoring the parts of it that don't suit them.

Do you realize that you are on an American Web Site, someone may misconstrue your slander of American terrorism, you know since we are so over the top and all.
Sounds like you could use alittle religion in your life, since you are so hateful.

They are taught from birth they are only good people if they behave as Sheep! They must not think for themselves or act in anyway that is not approved by someone in authority, since there is no monarchy in America, they bend knee to an imaginary King. Hm-mm, perhaps there is a psychological reason behind the religious fanaticism.

Its not just Americans.
You will find that religious fanatics tend to live and grow where there is poverty and poor education.
If poor people with no education live in a country that is run by a bible, instead of a constitution (like iran, syria, afghanistan, etc) then you find REAL fanatics.
This is why I believe American religious fanaticism is not nearly as severe as the fanatics we find over seas.
