Cultural assimilation - the process whereby a minority group gradually adopts the customs and attitudes of the prevailing culture
I hear a lot of people attacking mexicans, that they need to assimilate to american culture. Ok, well let's see, I was born in america, i obey the laws, and when i do start working I'm gonna be paying taxes. My heritage and culture is of mexican background but you want me to assimilate to american culture, ok, well what is american culture? Do you want me to sit in a lawn chair cooking hot dogs and burgers? i'm not grasping this concept. So you want mexicans to assimilate to american culture, so then you want all mexican restaurants shut down, i would figure since the food is a mexican heritage and culture thing, i'm not sure what you want. What do you want from me America?
This is not an illegal immigrant issue, so don't make it one. I'm talking about people who always say mexicans need to assimilate.

People probably mean "be fluent in English" when they say "assimilate".

Assimilation is necessary to the point of language skills, having the legal and political understanding of how the host country operates. In short, how to get along here, (or there if in another country).
We don't want people to come here that refuse to give up their home countries tradition of honor and revenge killing for example. Not far fetched.
Permanent legal Mexicans do need to assimilate to the point of being able to function in the whole group of citizens. Who cares what you look like or what language you speak at home. Do you believe in the rule of American law, and its principles, and can you understand the cultural traditions concerning education / employment, etc.
Mexicans among others are coming here because many of their political and social traditions have lead their own country to the brink of ruin. Why would Americans wish to import those particular traits?
No one is claiming perfection here, but why is everytone trying to get in and not out?

The diversity of our different cultures is what defines America.
Most of us don't expect everyone to blend right in and start tailgating, riding around in pickups, drinking coffee at Starbucks, etc, or whatever you think it means to be a white American.
What people mean is that they talk about assimilation is that they want those who come here to learn English.

When someone assimilates they become loyal to America, to the United States. They give up loyalty to any other country. They would fight and die for the United States against ANY other country, including their former country. They give an oath of allegiance to the United States and its flag and not to any other country or flag.
They attempt to learn the language of that country, learn its history, its customs, its laws.
They're proud to be Americans and they don't hyphenate their citizenship.

to assimilate to your adopted country is to share what most of the society does .like working and paying taxes.stay away from trouble.give your best to make your own society lives in peaceful way.do not bring your bad habits that you have learnt in your mother land to your adopted land.if other discriminate you then turn your cheek the other way coz there more people in this world care about us migrants.my adopted country which is australia, most of the australians with anglo heritages are very warm hearted and so kind.as long they know that we migrants are assimilating to they society the more we are loved by them.the oz r good people.we r expected to be one of them as long we dont bring or pracites our bad habits that will make a big impact to their everyday living then we r welcomed.u can have your food here sell it n the oz will love to have it on their dining tables.i dont know about the yanks but in oz we love every nation foods on our tables.god bless australia and its people from other nation who assimolate to this greatoz society.

Learn English, be pro-American, not anti-American, be loyal to the USA (NOT Mexico or wherever), accept other people in the USA whatever THEIR national origin. Nobody says you can't embrace your culture, eat taco's, drink Corona, celebrate Cinco De Mayo or speak Spanish (in order to converse with AMERICANS, you need to KNOW English). However, be sensible, don't go around flying your former countries flag in PROTEST of the USA (why would you fly that country's flag in the country you give your oath of loyalty to, the country you left due to it's corruption?), don't fly it ABOVE the Stars and Stripes, don't fly our flag upside down, ACCEPT the USA's rights to it's traditions, whether you engage in them or believe in them or not. Don't go around calling Americans names just because they don't agree with you. There will always be those who COME here and Americans ALREADY here who WILL be 'racists', it's inevitable. Don't stereotype ALL Americans as racists because of THEM. Live in harmony with Americans, become one, and most will accomodate you with the same courtesy.
