boys are more protected of there moms, so it's hard for him to respect you when his father already done left so he don't want his mom to go through the same thing twice. kids are smarter then you think! but don't say he pisses you off in front of him, just say he doesn't listen to you and his mom needs to step up and control the problem, this is how it's going to be with a ready made family, try to be nice he's a child but he still needs to respect you and you need to respect him and his feelings

Here's where the problem lies..You have a girlfriend that has a child that you have been living with for seven years..
Assuming you probably don't respect his mother or him..why should he respect you? Providing that's the case.
After all, you are not his father, neither are you his mother's husband. Get the picture?
One or two options..Marry the woman or two get your own place.
Problem solved....

Deep inside you don't want to bring up the son of another man. OK. But, at the end of the day, he is connected to you and has an important part to play in your life. Make every effort to love and care for him and do you know what, in the future you will reap all the benefits.

He was probably the man of the house and felt responsible for his mother. I know my son did. He would tell me every night, "Good night, if you have to get up, watch your step." he also felt very protective because his father was abusive. It is hard to give up that role so he is probably trying to hold onto as much of his "position" as possible.

the kid probably doesnt respect you and possibly you dont respect him either so it goes both ways - you are not marreid to his mom either so that probably makes him think this is only temporary situation....
saddly I think there are alot of kids and adults in similar situations -
try doing things with the kid show the kid you like him, praise him when he does well or when he helps
you didnt post the age of the kid and that may make a difference too - teenagers are more rebellious anyhow

He pisses you off because he doesn't respect you. He probably still thinks that his mom & dad are going to get back together & you're the reason that they aren't at the moment. His mom needs to set him down & tell him that her & his daddy aren't getting back together, you're her new boyfriend, & he needs to get the hell over it.

Get your own place you are supposed to be an adult.Act like one,and leave the kid alone,he probably thinks you should be able to take care of yourself too.

It is natural for a child to resent their mom's/dad's new partner. He/she is NOT THEIR MOM/DAD. Try to make it clear that you are not trying to replace his dad, just to be there for his mom.
