I think that it is in the process of taking place and will accelerate as we get closer and closer to the return of Christ. Just look at the stories in the news about the compromising liberal churches that are bowing their knees to the shifting winds of societal opinion instead of to the revealed will of God and Jesus Christ.

Then consider how many "feel good" churches there are where they preach "gospel lite" - less filling, tastes great - when you only want to hear about God's love and you don't want to hear about the need for personal holiness and a life of continual repentance from sin.

The apostasy began even before all the New Testament books were written. Have you not read, for example, 1 Corinthians, Galatians and the first 3 books of Revelation? People began immediately falling away and preaching a gospel different from the one that Jesus gave (Gal 1:6). John spoke of the antichrist, not any one particular person who had come or was to come, but anyone who denies that Jesus Christ is God (1 Jn 2:18, 22). John wrote in the 1st Century: "Even now many antichrists have appeared." The apostasy began and continues to this day. The antichrist could be a little old lady in a nursing home; it is anyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ. To answer another answer here: the Bible does teach faith is required for salvation. But REPENTANCE and BAPTISM are also required (Acts 2:38; 1 Pet 3:21).

"THE" apostasy? No. To be honest, I don't think there can be such a thing. In order to have "the" apostasy, there kind of has to be "the" faith first, does there not?

There is apostasy every day. In every religion. Every belief, religious or not, has someone who is willing to twist it willingly to gain power, influence, money, or the like. Every culture, every religion, and every society has its con artists, it's influence men, and it's just plain amoral lunatics. A number of them happen to make their livings pretending to be holy, or that "god speaks to them", or simply peddling upon the superstitions of the faithful.

But for their to be a "THE" Apostasy, a universal apostasy, there has to be a sort of universal Faith first. Now, since you did not specify, I'm assuming here that you meant the Apostasy referred to in the Christian religion. Well, even from a Christian perspective, look at the "christian faith"... there are thousands of individual denominations, ranging from the really large to the single congregation. Each of them view theirs to be *the* correct faith. A good number of them even go so far as to make the claim that "everyone other than us is completely wrong."

Within the Christian world then, there is no one, uniform faith... no one particular, concrete, definable, absolute faith that anyone could say conclusively to have "willfully turned against" in order for there to be *THE* apostasy.

Although, it could be said, from a certain point of view, that *THE* Apostasy has already taken place, in millions of little pieces, over the last few thousand years... That Apostasy would have to be the notion that finite, mortal man could somehow "corner the market" on an infinite, eternal Divinity. This claim has been made millions of times, by hundreds of thousands of people, in thousands of different sects, over the last 2000 years, and that's just within the notion of "Christendom" itself.

Simply because the one notion that it seems *all* Christian sects believe in common is that God is infinite and eternal, and nearly all of them have some kind of "ours is the only true faith" clause.

Should that happen to be the case, the big kickoff for *THE* Apostasy happened at the Council of Nicea.

Yes it has! Well, it has been around for some time - Earthquakes everywhere - Tsunamis! War here and there - Volcanoes Erupting simultaneously.... And Finally - The mark of the Beast in our foreheads and or right hand. MONDEX - with Motorolla Technology has developed a Microchip Transponder that is implanted in our forehead or right hand since these points generate the best thermal energies needed to recharge the lithium cadmium batteries powering these microchips. This is also the safest way to do business since you don't need to carry cash or credit cards anymore. (You cannot be robbed of your money) - There are restaurants in America that does not accept cash anymore. In fact this concept of electronic cash is now controlled (51%) by MasterCard. (Ever wonder why they called it MasterCard in the first place?) Check out Revelations.
At any rate - it has been around for about a year or so already. We are in a constant vigil for his coming. Like a thief in the night - no one really knows. But it is better to live according to his righteousness at all times, then we will always be at peace and we will always be ready.

Yes. The universal apostasy began in the days of the ancient apostles themselves (2 Pet. 2:1-2); and it was known to and foretold by them. Paul recorded specifically that the Second Coming would not be until this great falling away took place. (2 Thess. 2:1-12.)

After the killings of the apostles of Christ, His gospel and the keys of authority went with them to their graves. The nations of the earth went into a moral eclipse called the Dark Ages.

Yet with the Holy Bible in our possession, the apostasy continued until the restoration of the fullness of the gospel was restored in 1830, when Joseph Smith received from Peter, James, and John those same keys to act in God's name, His Holy Priesthood. This fullness of the gospel is found today in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The term apostasy means willful error. A heretic holds a position that does not conform to an essential of Christian faith. However such a person does so out of the belief he or she is correct. An apostate person CHOOSES to depart from the faith for his or her own purposes.

There is a little heretic in all of us but one cannot be mistakenly apostate

There is no proof of that. It is based on a myth that was written in a book.
