Mauna Loa on the island of Hawai'i

2006-07-29 02:23:53 · answer #1 · answered by jxt299 7 · 0 0

Ojos del Salado in Chile is the tallest volcano above sea level
The biggest volcano on Earth is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, which is taller (from base to peak) than mount everest by 3/4 of a mile, however most of it is under the sea.

Yellowstone national park is all one huge volcano, so big it's called a supervolcano. If it erupted magma would be flung 50km into the atmosphere, everything within 1000km would die pretty much immediately, it would be the loudest noise heard on earth in 75 thousand years (the time since the last supervolcanic eruption), and there would be so much ash in the atmosphere that the world may go into an ice age because a lot of the sunlight would be blocked out, making it one of the most destructive volcanos if it erupted.

The newest volcano was formed in 1943 in Mexico, called Paricutin, which suddenly grew out of nothing in a farmer's cornfield, erupted for 8 years and then stopped. It will probably never erupt again.

The newest volcano to be seen is Surtsey, in the sea south of Iceland. However, it had probably been an undersea volcano for many many years before breaking the surface of the sea. Eventually after many eruptions it'll form a much larger island, in much the same way Iceland and Hawaii was formed.

The biggest volcano in the solar system (and also highest mountain) is Olympus Mons, which is 27km high, and more than 500km wide. It is so big that if you were standing on top of it you wouldn't even know you were on a mountain, because EVERYTHING you could see would BE the mountain.

The largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii. It is above a hot spot. It's total volume is 42,500 cubic km. To convert that into something slightly more reasonable:

It could build a wall 1 km wide and 1 km tall around most of the equator of the Earth
or

a sidewalk 1 m wide and 10 cm thick about 10 million times around the equator
or

cover the entire surface of the Earth with 8.3 cm (about 3 inches) of lava!!!!!
That's a big volcano! and I'm happy it's right where it is.

Thanks for a fun question.

Active or in-active.? You really need to be a bit more specific.

The biggest volcano is one you have never heard of... there is a caldera in western Colorado that is OVER 200 miles IN DIAMETER... It's so big, even the U.S.G.S. didn't recognize it as being a volcano until after satellites could show the topography.

Moana Loa on the "big island" of Hawaii is the largest. It towers all the way from the ocean bottom to reach into the air high enough for snow to form on it's peak.
