Wouldn't it stand to reason that if as much energy was spent making our world as beautiful as possible as is spent trying to earn spiritual currency to get into some exclusive after life club, we would be the better for it? Wouldn't heaven take care of itself?

I think the main reason people are more concerned about Heaven is because they think that is the place that you will spend eternity. Either Heaven or Hell, and that is that. Once you die, that is where you go. Now, that doesn't speak anything about reincarnation, coming back and living another life, etc.

You would think that if a person spent their time trying to make the world a better place to live and lived a good life themselves that they would be rewarded, wouldn't you? But religion teaches that you have to believe in their God in order for this to happen. I think that many people use religion as a scapegoat and an excuse, but that is just my opinion. Notice I didn't say ALL...

In any case, I think the best idea I have seen presented about Heaven and Hell and all that was in the movie 'What Dreams May Come' with Robins Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Annabelle Sciorri. That movie was just simply amazing, and presented the idea that people do get to come back and have another chance at things. Also, you get to create your own Heaven and live there with your family and the ones you love. Hell is meant for people that do certain things while they are alive, but you can go and get them if care to try.

The bottom line is that we should be the best person that we can while we are here on Earth. We should do the very best that we can for ourselves and for others. Maybe there is no reward at the end of our lives, maybe there is only death. So if that is the case, why not live our lives to the fullest while we are here and enjoy what little time that we have? Make the world a better place for YOU and ME....

There is time made for both but The Eternal life is more important than the Temporary one. This World is not my Home. In case you haven't noticed this world is like a Snow ball headed the other direction. Oh yes the remark below says A Church says they are to heavenly Bound to be any Earthly Good, they better find a Assembly that is Heaven bound, You cant be to Heaven Bound if you are a Christian you know that.

I agree completely. I think some people find the worlds problems too difficult to deal with, and instead choose to tell themselves that these problems aren't as important as they might seem because the mortal realm is transient. If, however, people spent less time praying and going to church/mosque/synagogue/temple and more time actually doing something constructive to help people, the world would indeed be a better place.

It seems to stem from an inability to cope with reality, resulting in a need to attach importance to the esoteric, which cannot be tarnished by objective reality because, whether it exists or not, the only tangible reality of it exists in the minds of people, safe from the tumult of the real world.

My mother had an expression for this type of person.

"They are so heavenly minded, they are no earthly good."

For some people, this is a way to avoid dealing with reality. They use god as an excuse to not take responsibility for their lives and the world they live in. Some go as far as claiming that if a person pays attention to this life at all, they are reducing their "currency" in the afterlife.

It frightens the hell out of me when "end times" christians accept "war and rumors of war" because the bible says that's the way its gonna be, so that's the way it's gonna be. It's god's will.

The way I see it, as long as humans use ancient religious text to govern societies, there will be war and rumor of war. If god can accept warfare and destruction, it's not a bad thing.

I don't have a problem with god and religion, I have a problem with people using it to divide and destroy. Until humanity collectively says, "this is wrong," it will continue.

heaven... what ever that means, will certainly take care of it's self... will humanity?

it doesn't matter how much we do Earth, it will never be Heaven. it's natural and even spiritual for people to want to go to a better place when the one you live in has so much devastation and filled with people who thrive on evil all the day long. Heaven is already taken care of by God, without our muggy hands on it. Also we cant earn the spiritual currency to "get in", we must accept by faith what Jesus did on the cross for us....that's the ticket.

because many religious people see earth only as a ladder to heaven, and that's where they'll really LIVE. If you've ever read Agustine you'll know what i'm talking about. Earth is the place where getting salvation to get to a better place. Augustine belived in predistination and heaven as the city of god and earth as the city of man. He belived that men reached their highest potential in the city of god. St. Aquinas however belived that men can reach their highest potential on earth, so not everyone is that concerned with Heaven.

Well, I'm all for making the world we live in a great place.

Remember that we're only going to be living here for a very short period of time and Heaven (or Hell) is an eternity.

An eternity is a lot longer... a lot longer!

Almsgiving is good for us spiritually if we do it to help others (not when we do it because we think doing so will get us a ticket into heaven). Martin Luther rebelled against the Roman Catholic Church partly because they were selling indulgences (notes that "guaranteed" entry into heaven). The right kind of almsgiving feeds the poor and helps us minister to those who are in need. It always upsets me when I hear T.V. evangelists preaching over and over about sending them money..."If God has been good to you, send me money", "If you want to be saved, send me money", or even worse when they talk about "seed money" (the idea that if you send this guy money, God will see to it that you have more money). Most of these guys live in houses that they could sell and feed a small country. It is a mockery of the idea of almsgiving. So I agree with you.

This world is a heaven or hell according to the rise or fall of the values of life at a particular period of time. I agree that we should utilize our energy to make the present world as beautiful as we can.Care for the present, future will follow suitably.
