Religion goes back to the earliest times in prehistory in an attempt by mankind to explain the world around them.
You need to go to the library and check out a book on Anthropology. Or, look in an encyclopaedia on-line under religion or primitive man. Or, obtain a Time Life book on religion or primitive man from the libary. Or, do an on-line search using key words and you may find something interesting.
Having other people do your work for you is not the key to your future. Maybe once you have an education you will have others work for you. Not now!
School is about doing your own research. That is the point!

If you need this information for an essay, then this is the wrong place to ask. Go to the library and ask a librarian to help you find information related to origination of religion. It's their job to help you find that stuff.
To answer your question, I believe the first sign of a belief in the spirit world are the cave paintings, which are thought to be sympathetic magic. The first sign of a belief in the afterlife is in the burial practices of some cave men (I can't remember the specific era), in which they buried flowers and needed items with the person.

Religion dates back about 70-100 thousand years. At that time there was a shift in the cognitive abilities of Homo sapiens in central Africa. We don't completely understand the genetic component, but something changed in the human brain. After that time, we start to immediately see the development of art, religion, and advanced levels of culture that had been completely absent in human society before. It was probably directly related to the evolution of language in humans.

Nature built into all living things, the fear of death. Without it animals, birds, people, plants, and everything else would take no precaution to protect itself. So, without the fear of death, life would not go on.
In some animals, people for instance, this fear was so great that very early man started to imagine there must be a way to beat death. In their dreams, hallucinations, or imaginations they came up with various ways to cheat death.
Most imagined that we have some sub-microscopic part of us called a "soul" that travels through the trillions of miles to a land of milk and honey that they named "heaven". Others imagined this "soul" transferes from the dead person to another type of living animal. They called it "reincarnition".
So the whole idea of religion was imagined in order to cheat the grave.

The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved
to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first sign a species is achieving sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods. Read a book titled "The Source" by James Michener, that should give you some incite.

i hope it should have started when ppl started to live as a group, then smaller groups dominated by relatively bigger groups .... and when on big group didnot want to join the immediate senior group starting a new way of living starting to beleive or establish with alternate veiws and beleifs ....................
Think about stone age... then think about mesapotnian civilization, indus valley civilization..... what relegion did they follow????
in my opinion it all should have started when one group of people divided in to two due to rivalry or negligance or what ever the cause may be..... then they started to live seperately with different ways.........
i hope this makes a point...
how many relegion you think there is in this world today??? numerous... i guess.
Think of christianity, it was and is a single relegion in general, but why catholic, protestant......... when the time goes on and on there will be a split and this will be two relegion.....

Maybe it started when people were so afraid of making mistakes that they'd let other people make the decisions for them, and thinking that the majority or the older generation knows best.
