Absolutely. Those things which do not help Christians strengthen their faith, serve the Lord's will, take the Word to the nations, and rest and restore themselves for further service should be eschewed. May God bless and keep you.

While the quote is "the love of money is the root of all evil" and not "money is the root of all evil" you are still more right than wrong. How can you keep that money with so much poverty around you?

One person who preached, renounced materialism and tried to help the poor was John Wesley. Though he was the founder of the Methodist movement you won't find many true to his tradition in the Methodist churches of today (or any churches). John Wesley was not a hypocrite. Most modern day Christians are. We need a new reformation.

AMEN! But to answer your question I do not always do his name justice. Paul said "I DIE DAILY", and it is truly an everyday battle to let the Holy Spirit have his way over this flesh. What gets left out alot of times when Jesus is preached is our dying to this world and all the lusts it contains. That's why Jesus told Nicodemus "YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN". Gal. 2:20 says... I am crucified WITH Christ, nevertheless I live, yet NOT I but CHRIST liveth in me..Paul also said ".TO LIVE IS CHRIST TO DIE IS GAIN" But let us not forget that WE cannot live like Christ did or else we wouldn't need him to do it. The only actions he recognizes are those he does THROUGH us. If our actions don't originate from him then he doesn't recognize them. There are many, Jesus referred to them as tares, that say they are CHRIST'S that "talk the talk" and even appear to "walk the walk", but Jesus said of these that when they knock one day and mention all the works they did in His name that He will reply " DEPART, I NEVER KNEW YOU". Well I'll get off my soapbox now. Thanks for such a great question.

Sorry,we are different members of the same body. Not all of the members are to teach.Without Christians with wealth who would help Christians with no wealth. The world goes on we are to plant and to gather for the future so that we will be prepared.
Christ was wealthy himself,he was given gifts of gold, his earthly father worked for wealthy men and made very good money. It was only when he was teaching that he did not take wealth with him,yet still he had a treasury which Judas was in charge of.
You should read more than one passage to base your life on.

I don't think any human on earth can follow the path exactly as Christ walked. Humans are not perfect. Even Christ admitted to not being perfect when He lost His temper in the temple yard. I try each day to walk as closely as possible to Him. I stand up and defend Him and His name when others ridicule and persecute Him. I pray to Him every day and night. I never forget to thank Him for His wonderful blessings He bestows upon me and my family.
Praise the Lord.
Amen

Depends on what your definition of materialism is.

If you own rental properties and someone looses their job but you keep them in their home and let them live there till they can get back on their feet financially, I would think of you as a Christian.

If you gave everything away but still held many of the bigoted judgmental beliefs that many who claim to be Christians espouse, I would not consider your actions as being a correct example for me to follow as a Christian.

A Christian to me is someone who follows the teachings of Jesus in their interactions with others. I do not recall Jesus saying that we needed to be destitute to do this.

Love and blessings

It's hard man.
If I want something, sooner or later, I get it.

You are right guy.

But at least I'm within the Christian admonition of modesty.
I don't want a 10,000 inch TV as long as mine 27" one does the job.
I don't want a Hummer parked out front. My ol' wore out Jeep is still getting me wherever I want to go. When it does die, I'll just get a half wore out Jeep and keepagoing.

1/4 million dollar houses are going up all around mine little thing I live in. I don't want one of those.

So, at least I'm trying Guy.

GOD ALMIGHTY Own's all of the Gold and Silver.
JESUS was rich from the Get-Go. the Wise Men brought HIM GOLD, Franincense and Myhrr.
JESUS became Poor so that WE could become RICH.
It take's alot of Money to go into all the World and Preach the Gospel to Every Creature.
Just don't let Riche's take you away from JESUS and Destroy you.
p.s. JESUS took Bread and Multiplied it to feed Thousand's, don't you think that HE coulda' done the same with a piece of GOLD? Ditto.........

While I call myself a Christian, (because I truly believe that Christ died for my sins, and I have asked Him to forgive me) I can honestly say that I do not "tread this path".

I am sorry, I like my internet, my tv, my clothes & shoes, my vacations, my car, and my home too much.

Though it`s ideal that a true christian should not crave for material gains,it`s not practical as every Christian is duty bound to look after family and society and for that material gains like money are needed. The nearest we can come to true Christianity is to spend maximum time energy and other resources to glorify God and perpetuate faith.
