I think it's a matter of personal faith. I truly believe in the power of one's own mind. If you want to change your life enough, then you will find a way from within yourself.
Perhaps belief in Jesus is a convenient excuse for not believing in oneself, when you are the only person who can really change you!
Love the cockroach reference though!

Your argument is zip. Cockroaches don't give the strength to people to change their lives. That is the department of Jesus. I know that you may not have seen that first-hand, but it is so.

Well, there is obviously no way for anyone to win this argument because it is based on what he experienced and what you think. I agree with your friend because my experience lines up with his. I know what it means to walk with Jesus and to see His power in my life. I can't possibly convince you of that because it is something you can only understand from the inside and never from the outside looking in. The only way you could ever comprehend it is to surrender your will to Jesus and let Him show you. Unfortunately, you are far from that place.

Well, give your friend credit. The end justifies the means, right?
Okay - it's a rationale. And it's a rationale that maybe you and I don't need. But whatever helps a person clean himself up is good.
Jesus may just be a placebo, but placebos have thier place in the mind-body relationship.
If you promise never to ask yourself whether or not it's real, that is...

Maybe, in cases like these, Jesus is just something else for their addictive personalities to latch on to. Could be worse though, it could be the booze and drugs again.

I think it's different for everybody. For me, it is more like a journey of learning what I need to change in my life. The help from Jesus comes from His word (the Bible) instructing us in how to be more like Him.
The journey began with me realizing that I couldn't handle life and sins are stupid and I need God guidance.

Anyone can live a good life if they put their mind to it.
But there'll always be a spiritual hole-in-your-heart and no matter what you'll fill it somehow.
And who says what is or isn't a good life? It seems you've got more religion in you than you think.
