No hard and fast answer to your question.

Most of the time in fits into the following categories

1. Ignorance (not knowing something is illegal)

2. Opportunity

3. Greed

4. Just because they are evil

Now - just because you commit a crime doesn't mean you are a bad person. Cops regularly commit crimes (not activating your siren and red lights before running a red light, speeding to meet colleagues at the local donut shop, etc, backing up and officer that you know has lied, etc). Some laws are not laws against morality (morality laws are laws such as killing, stealing, etc). Some laws are in place to generate income - some laws are in place to give some people more rights than others. Although you might have to pay a fine or jail, I don't consider breaking these types of laws as immoral.

Humans by nature are animals and in spite of our supposed to be intelligent superiority we have our weaknesses. Commission of crimes are circumstantial. Criminals are the product of our unruly society wherein the balance of so called justice has been corrupted by the influential, power full and wealthy people. People are motivated to commit crime because of lust, greed for wealth and power, poverty, prevailing condition conducive to a particular crime, poor education, broken family and poor upbringings, influence of bad and violent TV shows and more. There is a saying that an empty mind is the devil's workshop and indeed it fits very well most of the reason for the commission of crime. You invite or motivate a thief to do his dirty work by providing him the chance and means because of laxity and being showy.People with the strong inclination to commit crime sometimes becomes obsessed when their wrong doing go unpunished.

My guess is an inability to delay gratification.
In undergrad, issues of race, gender, and societal stratification were brought up.
These don't address the fact that committing crimes is kind of fun.
Getting high, speeding, whoopin' up on someone who disrepects you... These are all kind of fun (but antisocial) things to do.
If you ask a criminal why he did something, the usual answer is "I don't know".
They're like little kids - they won't cop to the real reason they did something because they're ashamed to say "I sell dope because it's kind of fun and easier than working a straight job". A little kid would never say "I stole the cookies from the jar because I like cookies, and I wanted one."
On a personal note,I got into law enforcement because it's the same kind of rush I got boosting cars as a kid. Running, jumping, chasing and fighting are societally acceptable ways to get that same rush of adrenaline.

Mostly laziness, and a sense of entitlement that they deserve what they don't have, even though they've done nothing to earn it.

When you actually talk to criminals, you'll find they all have rationalizations for their crimes. Most of them will tell you that they were just "unlucky" or "someone was out to get them" and thats why the only way for them to get what they deserved was to commit a crime.

Lack of respect for themselves and others. Or, others and / or themselves. And possibly immaturity and ignorance.

A lot of criminals are just plain stupid people. I don't mean just because they got caught. They are ignorant. Never learned what life is about or how to be well adjusted and happy with their life.

because they value the need for sex or the item to be greater than the potential jail time multiplied by the percentage chance that they'll get caught plus the chance that they'll be found guilty

Why not. Chance of being caught are nil. Personal responsibility is frowned upon. If you steal or kill, it,s not your fault. Well at least according to us Liberals.
