In the dictionary it says that a bastard child is an illegitimate child, child born out of wed-lock. It doesn't matter whether either one of the parents are available or not. A bastard child is just a baby that is born when it's mom and dad are not married.

All baby's have a mom and dad. It just depends on the child's parents if they want to be a part of that baby's life or not. When neither one of it's parents want to be or can't be a part of it's life,and is given away is when the baby becomes an orphan. There is no such thing as half-orphan.

A child born out of wedlock (illegitimate) is referred to as a bastard...not just because the child doesn't have a father,....if the parents get married then the child becomes legitimate and is no longer a bastard.

Don't think there is a specific name for a motherless child...except unfortunate.

Well the term refers to a child whose mother and father were not married at the child's birth. So it refers to the situation and not to being "fatherless."

A truly "motherless" child would be non-existent.
