eBay.com if you have a bit of time to search. Some people sell cars with no reserve (no set price), and I am sure you could find something. When you purchase through eBay you are given a small guarantee that the deal won't be bad...more than you'd get through a classified ad in the newspaper. I bought a car on eBay in TX and it was a great deal. It cost more than $700, but I saved thousands.
Otherwise you could check cars.com and search for things in your area.
And if all else fails, you could get an awesome bike for $700...or a used scooter/moped.
Good luck!

For $700, or less, you can expect that you better be a good mechanic, or know one who will work with you! Tip him or her lavishly!!!

There are three aspects to technology.

1. Cheap! 2. good! 3 NOW!

you may choose only two.

And #1 means that you are willing to invest an equal amount of money in 'sweat equity'!

Buy one with problems that you can handle, or can afford to get fixed by others. Watch out for you high expectations, fantasies, because you want it to be really fast, super cool!

Most cars of less than $2,000 need a lot of repairs, do you choose one with ten 'minor' flaws, or two 'major' repairs? My experience is that the ten 'minor' repairs will bedevil you and never get fully fixed!

But, you can fix as you go, if they do not affect the 'Safety' systems!

Be practical, and, always ask your mother for her advice!

Check out the car repair forums in the newsgroups, or on the websites!

And, if the car is over 5 years old, the first things you need to do are (Come on, you know the seller didn't sink any money into this!):
1. change the brake fluid, engine oil and filter, and coolant.
2. change the air filter
3. put in new spark plugs, wires, and replace any checked rubber items like belts, hoses, tires!
4. clean up the battery connections, then grease them to prevent corrosion.

Luis,

At a price point of $700 it is impossible to propose an exact model. You will need to try to find an older car that hopefully has had a single owner who took good care of it. Expect to have regular maintenance costs as parts wear out just due to age and use....regular items like tires and the battery but also things like the water pump, fuel pump, altenator, etc. Try looking in your local newspapers for cars or you can try cars.com. Bottom line: you want to look for a car that has been very well cared for as opposed to a specific model.

I've bought cars on a sub-$1000 budget before. The key here is not to look for a specific make or model but to look at the overall condition. Make sure the mechanical bits are OK, and if possible that there isn't too much rust - it makes repairs a real pain. And not to get something so strange that you can't buy parts for it.

Very difficult to buy a good car so cheap. I bouth an old Chevrolet Corsica once for 900 and it was a good car for 14 months until the transmission broke.
You have also to consider that you have to pay gas, insurance and repairs and maybe you can spend a lot of money in it.
look www.autroder.com or www.craigslist.org, maybe you can find a car from a student or somebody who doesn't drive anymore.

Find someone that's buying a new car that's looking for a good home for their old car.

Cheap cars are cars that most people don't want.
Cars that elderly people drive, young people don't want,
Not much you can buy with $700. Good luck

When negotiating price, ask if THEY will pay for a mechanic to inspect it. If they won't, they're hiding something.

If the engine is OK, and the body isn't too bad.

Go For It.
