It depends on which sound card you have, your speaker setup or what kind and brand of headphones you are wearing. I happen to just leave it on flat and adjust them manually through the equalizer or I just use the treble and bass settings on my speakers themselves.

It's all relative... I actually hate all the predefined settings.

It depends entirely on whether or not you have a hi fi system capable of reproducing the recording without the need for the use of an equaliser.

If you need to use one to get a decent sound then it depends on what sort of music you are listening to, where you are, whether you are using headphones, whether the source of the sound is mp3, vinyl, cd, sacd, etc. and also on the properties of the hardware through which you are listening to the music...

however

if you are playing something back from an mp3 player, or indeed in the mp3 file format, then you will probably want to find the custom eq option and boost the high and low end frequencies, as it is here that the mp3 compression software will remove information.

if you are listening to drum n bass, hip hop, dance music etc then you will probably want a bit more bass, a bit more high end treble (hi hats etc) and maybe to give the sound a bit of a lift in the mid range

when i am listening to classical, jazz then i try to avoid the equaliser altogether

when listening to rock music eg foo fighters disturbed hed pe then probably increase the bass a little. be careful when increasing treble frequencies as guitars played with a distortion effect can give unpredictable results

reggae i guess similar to jazz

so, basically, if you can use a custom eq setting then do so because presets will always be set up to somebody else's taste....

Each person has a different ear for sound and it depends on the song playing to, like in country they don't use a lot bass, like in the song picture by kid rock and Sharyl crow.
