Matt 4:8 to 18....Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’" Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Yes. For a time he does have power in this world. He is the "prince" of the earth. The Bible teaches that God allows Satan his "reign" for a while as God gives mankind the chance to choose between good and evil. Eventually Satan will be completely defeated.

But, although Satan has some power, it is subject to God's power. His offer to Jesus wasn't completely honest. Surprise, surprise.

No! People have a free choice on which to follow. Consider the Roman Government in Jesus day, did Jesus own or even want to own them? He said My kingdom is not of this world. He is not a politician. He is in the business of love and compassion. When Herod heard of the King of the Jews he had all of the children 3 and under killed. He was out to destroy the king.

At the time, Satan did enjoy dominion over all the earth. He got it from Adam, who originally received it from God.

Adam traded away dominion over the earth to Satan, in exchange for the knowledge of good and evil.

It was a fool's bargain.

Satan lost everything when he engineered the death of the innocent Jesus.

Now, all power in heaven and earth has been awarded to Jesus Christ.

Any power Satan still enjoys on earth today is due only to those who personally prefer to follow him, and to give him their allegiance.

But that won't last forever.

Satan is ruler of the world 2 Corinthians 4:4

Satan wouldn't of offered Jesus something he did not posses? and Jesus never denied Satan was ruler of the world.
That is why the trinity concept about Jesus being God falls apart.
Why would Satan offer God the world? God can have it anyway!
besides how can you tempt God. Is God going to betray himself?
Say if God was tempted then God would have to destroy himself.
Trinity is so illogical.

Yes i agree with KeAh, we were given the authority over all living things but by sinning we gave the Devil the authority, so the Devil was just using the Authority. But by giving our lives to Christ we take back the authority from Devil because Jesus took back the authority when he rose from death.

Satan is referred to in 2 Corinthians as "the god of this system".

2 Corinthians 4:3, 4 - If, now, the good news we declare is in fact veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing, among whom THE GOD OF THIS SYSTEM OF THINGS has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.

Never thought of that.
Of course,he cannot offer something which he has no control of it.
And if he(Satan) does has control,I believe it would be wise for Jesus to accept it too,as the "Lost sheep of Israel" badly needed a political messiah because they were under Roman oppression and occupation.Fyi,there were also heavy Jewish terrorist activities against the Roman too.

SATAN OFFERED CHRIST TO BE RULER OF ALL THE GOVERNMENTS IF CHRIST WOULD FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP SATAN. THIS ALL HAPPENED TO TEMPT CHRIST, SO THAT HE TOO COULD GO THROUGH WHAT WE GO THROUGH. ONLY HIS TEMPTATION WAS FAR GREATER THAN OURS. AND NO, NOBODY "OWNS" THE GOVERNMENTS. WHAT IS BEING SAID IS THAT SATAN CAN AND DOES COERCE AND PERSUADE PEOPLE TO DO ALL SORTS OF THINGS. HE HAS THAT POWER AND USES IT TO GET US TO TURN FROM GOD ON A DAILY BASIS. SINCE HE(SATAN) IS THE PRINCE OF THIS WORLD, HE HAS THE POWER TO PERSUADE PEOPLE AND SITUATIONS, SO THAT THEY WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED CHRIST IF SATAN WOULD HAVE GIVEN THE GOV'S TO HIM. ALL THE GOV'S OF THIS WORLD ARE RUN BY SATAN ANYWAY. READ THE "LEFT BEHIND" SERIES OF BOOKS , AND THEY WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU EVER HAD A QUESTION ABOUT. YOU CAN GET THEM AT WAL-MART.GOD BLESS.

In a Jungian sense ... one could view them as temptations based on the extremes of his three biological imperatives ... rather, the "instincts" by which every species survives ... namely "greed, lust and anger" ... but I suspect the "lust" one got watered down ... and anger seems a bit muddled too- although a drive to "power" could be seen as similar ...

A point of curiosity ... in legendation Gotama the Bhuddha sitting under the Bo Tree underwent the selfsame temptations in the form of the "Three Dakinis"... feminine and very representative of the lifedrives ...

God allows Satan to run the world until Christ returns. It's apparent given the mess it's in.
