Here it is- it has worked for my 2 kids, and others after I tell them........
1. get m and m's handy
2. get a small potty chair- mabee one that plays music
3. get a couple books about potty
4. you need to be home for about 4-5 days straight
5. now you can start. let them run around bare-but
6. Set the timer for 1/2 hour. Tell him/her to sit on the potty for 5 min. (read them a book in the mean time if it's to long for them.) If they go, give lots and lots of praise!!! I mean go crazy!! Give them about 3 m and m's.
7. Set the timer for 1/2 hour
8. Avoid asking the question "you got to go potty?'
9. Timer goes off- ok! What does that mean junior? Time to go potty again he or she would say, or you say it if they don't
10. repeat process all day long. If they go # 2 in the potty, reward with a handful of m and m's. They are very colorful and kids love them!!
11. Praise praise praise. I do spank my kids for behavior problems such as lying, disobedience, and bad attitudes, but never for having an accident. If there is an accident, clean it up queitly, and don't say much at all. Remind them it's ok, but try to make it in the potty next time, or in your own words.
Good luck!!! Hope this helps you. My 2 year old girl was potty-trained in one day with the method. Took my 2 1/2 year old son a week. Leave pull-ups on them at night just in case.
p.s. if this doen't work at all, try again in a few months.

I am sorry but at 20 months I very much doubt your child is ready to potty train!
You can't make him sit on the potty and hope to catch something-thats not potty training-thats just horrible!
You start potty training when your kid is old enough to say he has wet his nappy or feels dirty, then he next stage is when he says he is ABOUT to wee or poo..then you know its time to start getting the potty out..if you try and his not ready his just going to weee/poo on the floor -you'll get mad and he'll be upset as he doesn't understand what is expected of him.
You can't potty train a kid until THEY are ready...usually from 2 and a half yrs old,tho sometimes it can take up to 3 yrs old.
So stop rushing this kid along-its not ready!

20 months does sound kind of early. i started mine at almost 2 years, mine were all potty trained easily. i think it was because i didn't make a big deal of it. it took less than 2 weeks, even with the boys. i would sit next to them and read them stories, and as soon as they wanted to get up, i let them. pay attention to how soon your goes after eating or drinking, and try to tell when he usually goes, then take it from there. you'll have a better success rate. if you think it's about the time he usually goes, sit him down, and distract him with a book. when he accidently goes, and you make a big deal over it, get him off the potty right after, he won't be afraid of it.

Let him look at picture books or sit down with him and read his favorite stories. Also, maybe a sticker chart for successes might work or awards of little toys or cars might work if he stays put and you are clear with him exactly what you want and why (in toddler terms).
Maybe a musical tune he likes that is about 3-5 minutes might help.
and maybe telling him he can watch a favorite movie if he stays seated and goes potty as he needs to.
There are good potty books out there, both for boys and girls. And if you read them diligently, they work.

Put him in front of the tv on the potty seat, give him a book, or a baggie with a snack like cheerios. Get him used to the seat and make it a big deal, like telling him what a big boy he is, and how great he's doing. When he does go reward him with a great bug hug, kiss and lot's of praise.

Maybe play some little games. Is there an older child around (boy) that he can see do this on a "big" potty? That always helps. Make it fun for him - he'll do better. Good luck.

you can sit nearby (on the edge of the tub, etc) and look at a book or magazine and give your child one too and tell him it's reading time and make a game out of turning the pages. is your baby not ready? boys tend to train later.like around 3-ish give or take. 20 months is pretty young for potty training unless he/she is advanced. .good luck!

my son is 13 months old and he is potty trained now itself,he bears down while making the noise and then i know that he has to do it,i take him to the toilet right away!start by putting him on the potty after each mealtime and teach him how to bear down with noise, slowly in a matter of days he will catch up ,encourage and praise him at this time , if he gets up midway, empty the bowl ,put it down ,make him sit on it again and introduce a familier song or rhyme (that includes clapping hands)and make him involved,he'll make u clap your hands the moment you stop.if he doesnt have any more, wash him and take him out of the toilet. do not lapse in this routine of putting him on the pot bcoz the msg will be got across.what if he's in the middle of an act?haul him up then and there and seat him on the pot,and make the sound of bearing down he'll learn it fast and whenever he has anything he'll giv u the noise as the signal prior to his bussiness, kids are ready to be toilet trained once they cross six months and in our country mothers toilet train their kids early and they suceed well.giv it a try!
