I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

for further information on computer safety.

THERE ARE FEW THINGS YOU'VE GOT TO ASK BEFORE TAKING AN ANTIVIRUS.

1. IS IT POWERFUL? AVG IS VERY POWERFUL.
2. IS IT EXPENSIVE? AVG IS FREE, AND PRO VERSION IS CHEAP.
3. ARE THE VIRUS DEFINITIONS DOWNLOADABLE FROM THEIR WEBSITE? YES...AVG PROVIDES UPDATES FOR FREE AS WELL AS THE BOUGHT VERSIONS.

4. WILL THE ANTIVIRUS CAUSE NUISANCE WHEN I AM WORKING WITH OTHER PROGRAMMES? SYMANTEC IS A PROBLEM IN THIS CASE...IT POPS UP UNWANTED UPDATE MESSAGES ALL THE TIMES. AVG DOESN'T DO THAT.

5. IS IT USER FRIENDLY? AVG IS VERY USER FRIENDLY.

FINALLY, I'LL SUGGEST YOU TO KEEP TWO ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMMES...GO TO ILLEGAL SITES, AND GET YOUR COMP AFFECTED BY MILD VIRUSES AND MALWARES. THEN RUN BOTH THE PROGRAMMES. CHOOSE THE ONE THAT DOES THINGS FAST AND BETTER.

OHHH AND WITH AVG, YOU COULD SCAN SELECTED DRIVES RATHER THAN SCANNING THE ENTIRE COMPUTER...YOU COULD RIGHT CLICK AND SCAN ANY SINGLE FILE TOO. IT IS VERY USER FRIENDLY.

YOU MIGHT ALSO WANNA SEE MACAFEE ANTI VIRUS PROGRAMME.

You have your choice. AVG-Free, but I would get the paid version if you get it, McaFee, or Symantec (Norton) These are all great antivirus software programs and I would suggest you research them all first. If you don't have a program now, I strongly suggest you DO get the AVG Free program now, and get something else later if you prefer. Having no antivirus program is like having sex with the AIDS virus bareback. Your just asking for a virus.

avg is the best because its free and updates daily and takes 30 mins approx to do a complete scan unlike some of these pay ones that take either 12 hours or 5 mins

Symantec is the best anti-virus...this is commonly used in places like doctors offices where personal information MUST be protected by matter of law
