Despite all the controversies, I believe there's much honor and courage in the military and the people in it. If he believe in an ideal, he'll know what to fight for. If he has nothing he believes in, then, he needs to find something else. The uniform stands for something and no one person is big enough to accomplish that. That's why many people have to wear it under the same banner. All they have to do is to stay true to the oath they took when they were issued the right to wear the uniform. The rest is whatever that was meant to be. A person who was meant to get hurt will get hurt anywhere and a person meant to die will die no matter where they are and despite the precautions they've taken.
