If there is lots of leg room, the arms of the seat usually don't fold upwards. Which seat do you ask for? I have a 20 hour plane journey ahead starting this evening.

Well, there's two ways to look at it.

One: If you are worried about many bathroom breaks and not wanting to wake the person sitting next to you, then take seat in the aisle, but be fair warned that ever person that walks by will bump you if you are trying to sleep. Just a realistic view of what's happened to me.

Two: Do you want to rest a lot? The best way to get a good rest on a long flight is with a window seat. Grab that tiny pillow and rest your head against the wall/window and doze away. No one smacking your elbow when they walk by waking you and no one needs to wake you to head to the restroom. I have trouble sleeping on airplanes anyway, but getting a window seat really helps.

I live in Australia and take long flights a lot. The Exit row seats are good but also tend to be beside the toilets which generate a lot of traffic and people waiting by your seats to use the toilet.

Good tip is to request an aisle seat, in the center row, right at the back. These are the most uncomfortable BUT, here's the trick, they are also the last to fill. SO - you may be lucky and have 4 seats all to yourself so you can stretch out and have a good sleep.

When you check in, ask if the flight is full. If it's not, ask for the back row center (aisle seat).

Good luck with it - it's a very uncomfortable journey when you have to try to sleep sitting up.

If you like more leg room, go for the bulkhead seats. (Although now some airlines are putting bulkhead/exit rows as "Specialty seating" and charging an extra $10-30 for requesting them. I'd say go for either window or aisle. I hate being sandwiched between people. Window seats are better if you plan on sleeping through most of your flight, but aisle seats are better for short flights if you want to get off the plane faster, or if you want to get stuff out of your overhead luggage.

For a 20 hour flight, depending on where you are going, you may have a leg of the flight (i'm assuming it's not a direct flight) where there aren't as many people on the plane. If this is the case, fing a spot to stretch out across a few seats, so you can catch a good nap.

Good luck!

Ask for a window seat. At least you will be able to lean on the wall. If you are very tall, request the section behind the divider between the crew sections or bathroom areas; there is more leg room. My husband, at 6 foot 2 inches, always did that.
Be sure to get up and walk around the plane to keep your circulation going.
Good luck and good flight -- take some extra water with you.

Get there with plenty of time in advance, so you can ask for the first row seats. These give you enough room to move around in.
If there are no babies on the plane (A mother with a small child has priority for these seats if she wants them).. you'll be ok...

If you can't have one of these ask for aisle seats...at least you can stretch your legs out in the aisle and only have to pull them in when someone is walking down it...

The window seat is great if you are short, and don't intend to move during the whole flight!...(that is my case! :-D )

Have a good trip

...20 hours! Are you going to or coming from Australia? What's your destination? (Sorry...I'm a curious old Nany by nature!)

I always ask for an aisle seat, as I am a bit claustrophobic. The most leg room would either be the first row, or the row by the wings, where the emergency exits are. I prefer a row to the back, closer to the bathrooms. Have a good flight.

It may be too late to get one, but seats in the exit rows (over the wings) can be good. There is much more leg room. However, you have to be careful. You want the last row in the exit row, because the seats in front of you (which also have lots of leg room) cannot recline. They can't recline because that would block the pathway to the exit door. However, if you are in the last row, you have the extra leg room, the seats in front of you won't recline onto your lap and legs, and you will be able to recline (because the row behind you is not an exit row).

It really depends on how comfortable you are with flying. I prefer having a window seat in the middle of the plane, but don't really like seeing the engine/wings.

Definitely avoid the very back of the plane, it's quite uncomfortable for take off and landing...

i always pick an isle seat, especially on a long flight.
It will let u get up and out much easier without having to bother or even wake the person next to you,and it is not as cold as i found window seats to be a bit colder than other seats.
Either way , have a safe flight.
