As cheap hotels are expensive in NYC, the better hotels are relatively cheap.
Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village at the start of 5th Ave but a long way from Macy's etc.
The New Yorker in midtown v handy for the shops.

Yes, we stayed at the thirty thirty hotel on fifth ave ! The price was reasonable we spent about 400 for a week! and it was right around the corner from Macy's and the warehouse district and about 20 minutes walking distance to times square!

Hampton Court in Chelsea! I booked it through expedia......and with 4 nights there...and the flights from the uk...via Paris...for only £500...and the Hotel has recently been completely refurbished.....very central...few minutes to the Empire State Building...and also Time Square and Broadway!!! VERY CENTRAL!! Hope you enjoy....remember...don't take much luggage wise...and when coming back...make sure all the labels are off your shopping!!!
