a lot of people think we get paid pretty good in the military. Yes we get a lot of benefits in the military but as far as pay, not so much. Many military indiviual live below the poverty line. When I first joined I was told both by my dad and friends that I will be living from pay check to pay check.

I think if minimum rage goes up so should military pay but I know that wont happen.

Elke, your comment makes a lot of sense which I didnt think of. You would think if you earned the raises over the years then why does it make sense to raise minimum rage so new people are making the same thing. I wonder how they are going to go about this whole thing cause that is a big raise in minimum wage.

People in the millitary get paid just enough to live off of. I seriously live from paycheck to paycheck and thats as and E5. I make approx 25000 a year.

The only way to really get any money is to go the desert and get all the pay that is involved in that. Thats why most people volunteer.

CANTCU.....

I have to disagree with one thing you say. I didnt think you can get fired from the military but guess what. I am due to re-enlist soon and after nothing but positive ratings and awards the AF is telling me we have to many people and we have to let some go. I dont mind though I am going Army now and cant wait.

Just wanted to fill you in that not all military branches have the job security that I thought when I joined.

No, I don't.

I think military wages are a separate issue!

While military pays should be increased, they are certainly not in the same category as those making minimum wage.

Minimum wage is 10,000 a year, no nothing.

A high school graduate E5 with 4 years of service gets 18,777, and that does not includes additional money for jump pay, combat pay or other specialty pay, housing allowance. PX, you can live for nothing on base, all medical and dental for them and their families! They also don't get laid off!

An E6 over 10 gets $32,000, before Bennie's!

I have no issues with those in the military getting a pay hike and an automatic cost of living increase, which no one in the private sector gets, but the Richest of the rich are already tagged in with the bill to get:a big tax deduction!

When I went into the military I got $78.00 a month! And didn't get an automatic COLA!

And let me let you in on a little secret. Most people live from paycheck to paycheck. And most people are 2 paychecks away from poverty!

Regardless of whether minimum wage goes up, the military could always use a raise in pay. Even though we get good benefits, no other job is as demanding as the miltary, or as hard on you and your family. No other job requires that you get deployed to a hostile fire area with a 24 hours notice, and then sit in the desert and sweat your *** off for 6 months while your family is back home. If entertainers and athletes can make millions by playing a sport they love, why cant people who put thier lives on the line get more than $1000 a month?

I'm kind of biased on this question because my husband is in the Army but, I truly think the military pay rate should increase and not just because of minimum wage going up. Our military men and women put on uniforms everyday, not just the ones "over there" and serve our country and help to keep us all safe and let us all have a good night sleep yet, they have problems sleeping due to the fact that they have money problems, especially those with families! Okay, I can go on for a while with this so I'll just stop there! Yes, raise the military pay, they all deserve it!

YES,
my husband is an E-6 and so he claims our daughter and I. Which helps, but when you look at the big picture the only people living on post for free are single soldiers. Even then if you want a phone which you have to have you pay for it, same with cable. As far as family's living on post for "free" doesn't work that way, we get our BAH but if you want a phone, cable, Internet it comes out of your pocket not to mention your car payments and insurance. As far as BAH being enough for living off post it isn't. But we do have great benefits as far as the PX, and commissary its tax free so its not like there is a huge difference in how much something costs. But then the average civilian doesn't risk their lives in foreign countries and they are not on call 24/7 and pull 24 hour duty and are at work the next day, or deployed away from there family's for a year or longer at a time. If any thing military men and women should be paid more than a 16 year old kid flipping burgers at McDonald's.

I'm surprised to learn that people in the military don't get paid very well. I always thought you guys were pretty well taken care of but that doesn't seem to be the case. I am all for raising both the minimum wage and military pay. But I seriously doubt it will happen.

Well I am sure if you are in the military I def. don't need to explain to you anyways of increasing your pay grade the way it is now. I believe that if you are working for the military, and have a family (dependents) the BAH, and medical benefits are great. As far as the pay in general they could def step it up. Considering that a lot of military personal I work with their "stand down time" consists of working 48 hours a week - go figure.

Yes I agree! Your pay should go up.I have a son in the military and just like you said the benefits are fine but the pay is average.I think you all don't get paid nearly as much as you should! The pay rate change seems to be to much like right huh? However I wish you the best!!!!

people making the minimum make far less money in the same period of time than someone in the military. Even if the minimum wage gets increased to 7.25, somebeody making that hourly wage will still make far less money than somebody in the military.

Definately. I think it should. Soldiers are soldiers 24/7. Some get to work 9to 5 but some dont. So I think is fair, I think that if they are willing to give their life for this country thay should get a decent paycheck.
