Because it is very difficult to sell marijuana since anyone can grow it in their back yard. Alcohol is not that easy to make so most people have to buy it. It is all about he money my friend. If the government had a way to make money off this, they will legalize it. trust me

1. It is illegal, so who knows what kind of people you have to let into your life in order to get some. Somewhere down the line there's a drug dealer and all the horror that goes with drug trafficking - and you're helping to support that.
2. People can have a glass of a wine, a beer or a mixed drink with dinner without getting stupid. I think it is less common for the marijuana user to just use enough to relax and not get stupid-stoned.
3. Using it makes people look like the biggest goofball/dopes in the world. The expression on their face, the way the whole thing is done, etc. all is without a shred of dignity.
4. There's just a whole unappealing kind of dopiness to people who use marijuana. For example, they write a question with the words, "negitive stimga" when the words should be "negative stigma" and they spell "heroine" as "herion".
5. Ask any parent who has watched his/her happy, light-hearted, joyful, lively little boy or girl turn into a teen who starts using marijuana and getting dopey-stoned and silly and dumb-eyed if marijuana is such a harmless thing.
6. When children and teens use marijuana there is a very good chance they will use it so often it affects their academics and future and a very good chance they will try other drugs. When adults use marijuana they just come across like dummies who don't care that they're supporting the drug trade and don't mind dealing with really questionable people. When old hippies and other Baby Boomers use it they just look like pathetic has-beens who never grew up and learned how to live without getting high.
Those are a few of the reasons marijuana has a stigma. It deserves one. Alcohol is a separate issue with its own separate set of problems. Trying to point out the bad aspects of alcohol just to make marijuana look better is like when a kid breaks his mother's vase and points out that his brother spilled the milk two weeks ago - two separate things, no point comparing them.

I watched a special on this on the History Channel...I'm a tool, I know, but the History Channel is bumpin' sometimes :o). Of course, as others have said before, it was a government induced stigma, and not surprisingly... also racially related. (According to the special)... any type of crime a minority committed was attributed to marijuana, and it was also utilized in some way to get rid of the Mexican population. Racially, the crimes were claimed to have been made against the white community so the government pushed various advertisements through forms of media that would make the majority feel threatened. The following website has a pretty good summary of what the History Channel described.

The Cotton Industry lobbied to have marijuana illegalized back in the day because hemp was such a cheap, easily grown fabric source.

Yes, alcohol and heroin are dangerous. But contrary to what many hold to be true, marijuana is NOT "harmless." Pot messes with the same brain fucntions as do alcohol, cocaine, heroin, or any other mind-altering substance. Don't believe the hype. Marijuana is NOT natural or harmless.
People use marijuana to medicate themselves just as alcoholics use booze to medicate themselves. They medicate themselves from anxiety, depression, bipolar, etc. Self-medication is dangerous. If I need marijuana to "relax," then I have a serious problem. If you smoke pot or do drugs or overuse booze, I suggest you seek a therapist and psychaitrist who specialize in addictions.
Stay away from ALL drugs and alcohol, and your life will improve dramatically.
Love, Jack

Because government exaggerate the negative aspects of marijuana to scare nonusers away from it. Honestly, anybody who hgas smoked it knows it mellows you out, it deosn't make you go crazy or do stupid things, such as in the commercial showing somekid shooting his friend while high. You gotta be stupid, plain and simple, to do that. You see millions of people killed from tobacco-related illnesses or alcohol related accidents and ailments, but nobody gets killed or hurt directly from the use of marijuana. As for the unhealthy aspect of smoking it, it may be worse than tobacco smoke, but any user of both knows you smoke far, far less marijaun than tobacco. In my opinion , its just a plant that can be used to help with a variety of everyday ailments, just like legal herbs.

Im 31 years old, and I have smoked pot every day(give or take) since I was 15. If pot is so harmful to brain functions and causes short term memory loss, how was I able to graduate from MIT with honors?
BTW- I am not and have not ever been much of a drinker.

I have no idea. I live in the Netherlands myself and here marijuana is legal. And as you say, we see much more problems with alcohol and hard drug addictions then with marijuana. Makes no sense to keep alcohol legal and marijuana not. Look forward to any answers!
