What are your living arrangements? House? Apartment? Big yard? Little yard? No yard? Fenced yard?
When are you home? All day? Some of the day? Only a few hours?
How often can you walk a dog? Once a day? Once a week? Once a month?
How much grooming are you able/willing to offer?
Do you want to clean a litter box or clean the yard?
There are a lot of questions to be asked of YOU as a pet owner to make sure you wind up with the right pet.
Go to www.animalforum.com and on the homepage somewhere is a link to a quiz about what pet is right for you. It'll ask a variety of questions (like the ones above) and once completed will give you a list of dogs that would meet your abilities at the time.
Maybe it'll help you answer your own question!

you mean a dachshund? Depends on if you have the time to take a dog for walks, the time to train it, a yard for it to run in. If not, then get a cat. If yes, then get a dachshund.

Depends on how much time you have- a dog needs to be walked and have his poop picked up at least twice a day.
