As so many others already answered, it is a human being.
The riddle isn't Egyptian though; it comes from the Oedipus myth in Greek mythology.
According to the myth, an oracle told king Laius of the Greek city of Thebes that his son would kill his father and marry his mother. So when Oedipus was born his father exposed him on a mountain to die. However, he was saved by a servant and given to king Polybus of Corinth who raised him as a son.
At a party thrown by King Polybus, a drunken guest called Oedipus a bastard. Oedipus then went to the oracle to find out more about his origins. The oracle told him that he would kill his father and marry his mother.
After descending the mountain, he met an unarmed man riding a chariot on the road to the oracle. The man in the chariot demanded that Oedipus stand aside so he could pass. They argued, and Oedipus killed the stranger. The man was King Laius, Oedipus' father.
Oedipus decided not to go back home, but to go to Thebes instead. At the time, Thebes was terrorized by the sphinx. The sphinx asked her riddle to people passing on the road, and killed them when they couldn't answer. When Oedipus gave the right answer, the sphinx threw itself down the rocks. He was rewarded with the now vacant throne and the hand of the widowed queen Jocasta, his mother.
Within a short time, divine signs of misfortune and pollution began to appear in Thebes. The king searched for the cause of all these misfortunes. The seer Teiresias revealed to Oedipus that Oedipus himself was the source of the pollution. Oedipus discovered he was really the son of Laius and Jocasta and that the prophecy had indeed come to pass. Jocasta committed suicide and Oedipus blinded himself by forcing her brooch pins into his eyes.
