For those who said or think that you can't cuddle a bird, I guess you didn't have the right bird. Birds love attention and those that are very friendly don't have a problem with being cuddled, I have 5 Parrots that will get in your face if you don't cuddle them.

I've had to make the same decision :-) . I ended up getting birds, just because they're different. They may be noisy and messy, but how many rabbits you know that can mimic the sound of the microwave when they're hungry?
Oh, and don't fall for the idea that birds have to be handled all the time to stay tame. I have a breeding pair of cockatiels that I handle, at most, once a week. They're sweet and love to hang around me - as long as food is involved ^.^ . Their nippiness is due to the fact that they're **breeders**. They're bonded to each other and although they enjoy me, they're devoted to baby making, nest carving and all that cockatiel stuff. If you had a single bird, you would have minimal problems. The exception to this are the Alexandrian parakeets. They have to be handled often or they get nippy.
I do plan on a rabbit sometime in the future. I like the smaller breeds that don't take much room. The idea that they Can be litter trained makes me even more curious. But until then, I shall stick with my birds :-) .

It depends what species of bird you get: larger ones can be intelligent and cuddly to the point of being codependent and emotionally draining... which, if you have a TON of time and can committ to an animal for the next 30-80 years, can be extremely rewarding (my 2 cockatoos go anywhere that doesn't specificially prohibit pets- and most places just say "no dogs").
Bunnies can make great house pets, be potty trained, and like attention. My mother has one which, after running around the back yard, will come to her to lay in her lap and nap. It's really fun. I also know other people with bunnies which are also very social and house trained.
For both types of pet- it probably depends most on getting one from somewhere that raises their babies with enough attention and human interaction.
Research both (cockatiels can make great small cuddly birds), and then research and contact different breeders in your area. Don't rush, and eventually you will find the "right" pet for you, wether a bunny or bird.

Birds make a big mess and a lot of noise but can be soothing. Bunnies aren't nearly as fun when they become adults. They scratch and bite and can be very difficult to handle, although they can be trained to use a cat litter box, just like a cat.
I like pet rocks. They almost never make a mess and are rarely noisy.
...just kidding :)

If you dont handle a bird constantly, at least once a day they become anti social and scared. A rabbit , stinks , mates like crazy and doesnt do well in hot weather. How about a hampster?? I have all 3.
