Position the ball as if you are playing a 5-iron. Sweep the club like it is a fairway wood or driver.
In other words: play the ball at lowest part of your swing arc and don't try to take a divot.
The exception is that if the lie is terrible (tight lie, in a divot, etc.), you might want to play the ball slightly back in the stance so that the low part of the swing arc is just ahead of the ball. You should still try for the swing motion of sweeping the ball.

can be tricky this one as irons you have to hit down and woods you have to sweep off the fairway. too much sweeping and you miss the bugger so i always try to get some contact with the grass .....like a 5 wood i guess , hit a beauty last week 205 to the flag and got to within 8 feet.

Try 2 things:
Make contact with a sweeping motion, much like you would with a driver or 3 wood.
If that doesn't work, try making contact with a SLIGHTLY descending blow.
