Its all based on your taste but things you can look for is first does it smell pleasant if it doesn't then you could have a wine starting to go off as we say in the industry.. Second hold the Glass slightly sideways over a very white piece of paper, look at the very edge of the wine if it has a brownish color to it the at some point oxygen has gotten to this wine and this is not the best thing for wine until just before you drink it. Lastly is what You taste if you like the taste great..then you decide if the price is worth the taste. the best way to pick wine is to go out and taste..there are almost 4000 wineries here in the USA alone and thousands more world wide, so have fun finding and trying as many wines as you can.

it's all about you for this question. my husband and i like trader joe's 2 buck chuck ($3) and we also like sketch wine (at $30). you need to find what kind of red wines you like, chianti? merlot? do you like them dry? sweet? once you find that out see if you have a wine seller or a vinyard nearby, they can usually make very good suggestions if you just know what you like. if you make a trip to san diego you have the temecula wineries, orphilia (i think that's what it's called) and ferrera's. ferrera's had some of the friendliest people i have ever met! they are a little hard to find, but well worth it! paso robles also has a lot of wineries. you can normally taste for free or minimal at the wineries so it's a good place to do research. if you're planning on going to a few, make sure you have a DD, you'd be surprised how fast you get tipsy from tasting!

If it's good quality, a lot of people buy it. Sometimes, good quality wines are more expensive than wines that aren't of good quality.

How you are in the morining after. If your mouth tastes like you just chewed the a$$ out of a skunk.... It was not a quality (red) wine.

Taste it. If you like it, it is a good qualtiy red wine.
Just who do you drink red wines for anyhow--yourself for your enjoyment or others to impress them?
Myself, I know wines and I drink Pisano. It's a very good red JUG wine simply because I like the taste. And it's only $9 for a half-gallon.

Ask the following questions;
Do I like it?
Is it worth it?
If it stains your face & makes you look like The Joker, it's probably not the best quality...... (I speak from bitter experience on that issue!)
