Another piece of rhetoric I'm hearing is that there is somehow a 'debt' to Mexico. What part does that concept play, if any, in the immigration debate?

It is nonsense. The US and Mexico have been dealing at arm's length for over a hundred years. The Gadsden Purchase showed that US and Mexico negotiated as equals.

No! We owe them nothing.
The Mexican Cession is a historical name for the region of the present day southwestern United States that was ceded to the U.S. by Mexico in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the Mexican-American War. The cession of this territory from Mexico was a condition for the end of the war, as United States troops occupied Mexico City, and Mexico risked being completely annexed by the U.S. The United States also paid $15,000,000 ($297,310,309 in 2005) for the land, which was the same it had offered for the land prior to the war. Under great duress, Mexico accepted the offer. (wikipedia)
Hindsight.....we should have just taken it all when we had the chance instead of being so gracious and merciful.

It doesn't. Just grasping at straws to divert the attention away from Illegal Immigration. It shouldn't even be an issue. Why not go back further to the dinosaurs like some smart guy said in another post. I mean, should we really go there? I am sure we would all be booting ppl off their lands if that was an actual fact. Why weren't there protests in America... 50yrs ago? 30yrs ago? etc.etc.. We owe them nothing but to deliver them back to their home countries and force them to follow the laws of America and do what Legal Immigrants do. Come to America legally.

yes sir we do !

I know that doesn't sound popular but it should be !

We definitely owe Mexico !!

Yes sir we owe them about 2,000,000 illegal immigrants and wish we would send them back before they cost us more money, jobs, etc. But most will find someone here in the US to have a child with before we do anything then they can stay because they are here and related to a natural citizen and then they are eligible for all government programs which comes back to the cost us more. I have enough trouble trying to pay for raising my daughters without having to pay for everyone else who is draining our national funds. Sorry but you asked, I know I am not the most popular on this question but when my taxes go up 4% per year and I get a 3% cost of living raise, well let's just ask who's going to pay for me yanno?

We owe them nothing. The supposed debt is due to US expansion in the southwest. Be mindful that the winners write history. We won, therefore we can write history. The history we have written says that california, arizona, colorado, texas, nevada, and new mexico belong to us. Right or wrong? doesnt matter. We have that terretory, and mexico lacks the resources to take it. No amount of whining will do any good.

We paid fair market value for the Gadsden purchase. Additionally, I don't think Mexico holds any of our foreign debt. America doesn't owe Mexico anything.

As such, it plays no part in the immigration debate.

Yes,To Mexicans and Native Americans. (Land)

All the Southern States like California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and up to Montanna was stolen from Mexico by the Americans through wars and ethnic cleansing.

Nope. No debt there. Unless, of course, the folks south of the border want to copy the Muslims and whine about what the map USED to look like the century before last...... and while we're at it, why don't we just shoot people that cut us off on the road? (The point is that any perceived 'debt' is just plain unreasonable.) We all have much better things to do with our time.

Not so much.....Mexican-American War:

After the United States defeated Mexico, the U.S. paid 1 million dollars cash to Mexico for the territory we captured.

Not too bad.

None.

And we don't owe everyone in the world a better life neither. Nice as that sounds-it is impossible to do. We do owe the people who are citizens here a responsibility to do what is in 'their' best interest.
