i was petting my dog and found one spot was itching him. i looked closer and saw a penny size red spot on his skin. it was reddish and probably with blood sprinkled on top or something. it might have been a spider bite or something that he itched too much. i dono anyway i put neosporine on it. is neosporine safe for dogs on open wounds? any other suggestion?

neosporin is fine, however, please watch the site to see if it increases in size, as it sounds like it may be the fungal infection we call ringworm.

It's most likely a hot spot. Common in hot weather. Neosporine doesn't hurt dogs or cats, just not sure it'll do much for the hot spot. Your vet can tell you the name of a product. I forgot what it was called but it was the color a betadine and I bought it over the counter. It worked good too, just cannot remember it . Sorry!

Sounds like your typical hot spot to me. Neosporin won't help a hot spot though.

Talk to your vet and see if he/she will give you a bottle of Betagen (I paid $12 for it). You'll spray the spot 2 or 3 times every 4 to 6 hours.

You can also try alcohol (as it's pretty much the same thing as Betagen) but the alcohol will burn and you'll probably get a whimper or two out of your dog.

Neosporin is safe for dogs. I even had a dog who ate the inside of a tube of it as a puppy. The vet said not to worry .he was fine. That was 15 years ago.But it might not stop your dog from itching. esp. if the spot was caused by an insect bite.

My dog has an infection on her stomach and is on antibiotics. It turned into a hole. Once it started to heal I put neosporin on it. I wouldnt put it on there if it is a deep wound. Wait till it seals a bit and than apply it with a gauze of a q-tip.

I put neosporin on my dog and it has not bothered him at all. In fact it seriously helped him.

neosporine is just fine for dogs..however if its an allergy problem then hydrocortisone is better. you can get that at any drug store over the counter.
