I would say babysitter because they get that one on one interaction. They need adult interaction more than their peers. They can eaily pick up the bad habits of the other kids too- bad words, bad attitudes, not listening, things you have instilled in your child can just "go out the window" if your kids is around them all day long. Making a play date with other kids is different becaus it's only a couple hours here or their, but make sure you get a babysitter who loves kids, and are good with them. That your babysitter just won't put you child in front of a tv all day, but she would make a schdule, and really get down on the floor and play with your child.

An accredited daycare is what I've always heard is the recommendation. An "at home" daycare or a personal babysitter doesn't have any real assurance of what goes on during the day. Where I live there were twin two year old boys that drowned in a pool because a home daycare worker took a nap. If you have to leave your child with a stranger the best would be one that has a web cam you can watch them from work, or one where parents are in and out all day.

Day Care would be better, because your baby will have other children to interact and play with.
Even the best of baby sitters will not be able to provide a 3-year-old with the kind of 'company' he/she prefers !

if it's affordable, day care. the child gets exposure to a varety of other kids his age and there are tons of planned activities from art to dance to math to play. kids at 3 need that peer interaction and it's also great for them to learn a schedule.
