It is often stated at funerals that a person's body is not really the person, but the shell of the departed... Is this truth, or misguided setementality?

If you are a believer, you should believe that it's the body that dies and that the soul is taken elsewhere.

Whether the person goes to heaven or hell, that is another problem.

Death is not the end of life, It's just a priod of transtion. Life is a test, It's not supposed to be eternal. When people die, their test is over.Thier body dies and their soul is taken away.

NO! We ARE the soul! Our bodies with the breath of life from God- makes us THE SOUL! When we die- the breath goes back to God and we return to the dust!

If our bodies were just an inanimate vehicle for our souls- then why did God breath the breath of life into our body's nostrils?

Does the soul then NEED air to breath? When we die- we die! No, it's not the end, we will live again, but that's where the resurrection comes in.

That is, in effect, a spiritual question that you must answer for yourself. With all the variety and differences within world religion, the dividing line can still be simply drawn between those to believe we are who and what we are for our mortal and measurable lives; and those who feel we are "souls" who pass through human shells like some brand of ghostly virus.

You must decide.

Good luck.

wishfully thinkings
a person's body is the person, what else could it be.
a dog's body is not the dog, come on.
People invent all this things because they are afraid of death.
Dogs and cats are not afraid so they dont have souls, thats funny. So souls are only for animals that are afraid of death only? We are an animal too.
yes, misguided setementality.

It's true...but not to be discounted. It's a part of the whole. The body houses the soul...and the soul is a reflection of who you really are...your purpose in Life. You can honor this by living your Life...to the fullest...and staying in touch with this part of yourself.

As far as I'm concerned, my body is just the vehicle with which my soul uses to hang around here on earth.

Too bad the vehicle needs repairs so often! :P

it all boils down to what makes a collection of atoms into a thinking breathing being like a person. is it something physical (chemical reactions in the brain, etc.) or nonphysical (a soul, etc.). it's hard to know. science has yet to find anything resembling a soul perhaps memories are stored in a separate dimension, separate from our physical body. perhaps not. who knows.

It's true! our body here on earth is just a shell. Our souls live on. But even though it's just a shell, we love that shell because that was once our loved one. But now our loved one soul lives on for all eternity with God!

i had a near death experience because of a car accident when i was 17. I felt I was lifted and floating over my body... it felt like it was the real me and i was free of my body's short comings... it was wonderful and i look forward to the day i am free from it for good... in God's time.

Our bodies house our brains, which are in control of our bodies and thoughts. I believe our brain is the "real" person, or where our spirit resides. I believe our spirit does not die when our body dies, but continues on..
