This is also something that has always amazed me.
They must think if they scream and yell that they are trying to exert their authority over the situation. Either that or they are idiots ;)
Agree with your sentiment. If I was a copper I'd throw the book at any idiot that did that to me!

I have seen some of the programmes showing people yellling at police officers in America.I am totally amazed at how much they get away with and how patient your police officers are. If a driver is pulled over in the UK and they behaved in that way they would be taken to the police station immediately. Police officers should be treated with politeness because they are only doing their job. Especially so when the person pulled over has been doing something wrong. Our police do not even carry guns and I believe they command more respect from the public than they do in America. When I tend to perhaps have a criticism of our police I only have to watch one of these police programmes from America and I am eternally grateful that I live here in the UK.

people yell at the police because when they get in trouble they get panicky and irrational. it's a response left over from evolution - in the past, the best way for an animal to get out of danger (e.g. a fight with a stronger/larger animal etc) was to try to scare it off. that behaviour has remained, even though it is no longer useful.
basically, the reason behaviours like these are still around is that there are fewer "drastic" consequences to actions - a behaviour may result in jail etc., but very few will prevent the passing on of the trait to offspring. thus even improper or maladaptive behaviours can thrive in the human environment
p.s. i realise that was a bit longer than was probably necessary, but... whatever :)

I have met some folks who took it all the way to the line with me when I pulled them over. I think that at some point all of the posts above are accurate, at one time or another. It does tend to increase my "curiosity" when someone screams obscenities at me. It's funny how 1 ticket can multiply with just a little scrutiny. It is not common knowledge that traffic offenses are arrestable misdemeanors. Most of the time a citation / summons is all that is issued, but you can go to jail for, say, speeding.

I think these people used to have a fit when they were children to get what they want. When they're pulled over by the police, they realize that they've been caught red handed breaking the law and revert back to their childhood defense system. Waaa! Waaa!
If I were a traffic officer, I would throw the book at them!

As odd as it may sound; there are only 2 reasons that I know of that people yell at police. One is that they are angry and embarassed at themselves for getting caught. The second is that they have absolutely no regard for authority figures, think that they are above the law, and invincible. People in the second catigory are the most dangerous to police AND themselves.

Because, they're already caught. Sometimes, jobs have mostly negative connotations, like policemen, and people blame *them* because they themselves get pulled over, when it's really their own fault. It's just wanting to place blame or they get angry at the policeman even though they probably were going over the limit.

They're hoping the video from the police car will one day end up on one of those extreme video shows they show on Spike TV and the like.
Just hoping for fifteen seconds of fame, I suppose...
