I'm sure you meant ripe, not ripped, slight error. Everyone seems to think that thumping the melon is the best way, but, I have thumped a lot of melons and still can't tell. The best way to see if the melon is ripe is to check the "belly" of the melon. I consider the belly the part that would be on the ground. The part where you see possible scratches, discoloring from the rest of melon. Look to find the yellowist belly. (Excuse the word "yellowist"). Not white but some yellow. This means the melon has had a longer time to grow and ripen on the vine. Like a cucumber, if you let it stay on the vine the underside becomes whiteish or yellow. Not recommended for a cucumber, to many seeds.

PUT YOUR LEFT EAR ON THE WATERMELON. PUNCH THE SIDE THAT IS CLOSEST TO YOUR NOSE. IF YOU HEAR THE SEEDS SCREAMING, THEN YOU HAVE TO WAIT 33 HOURS BEFORE THE WATERMELON WILL BE RIPE AND READY TO BE EATEN.

If you mean ripped, when it's full of vodka.

If you mean ripe, when you thump on the outside and it sounds hollow.
