This is a common experience. It is caused, most of the time, by a person coming out of sleep. Their mind is awake, but their body is lagging behind. It only lasts a few seconds, but it feels like hours. This is also caused by sleep apnea, and Obstructive sleep apnea, and occurs when the body is not able to exchange CO2 for O2 in the lungs because of snoring or the collapsing of the soft tissues in the neck. talk to your doctor about this

Without more details it is hard to say, but this is a common version of a person who has suffered a stroke, however light and one that may not even register on a CatScan. Usually the dream is irrelevant to the point that it is the inability to move or feel like you can breathe that actually wakes you up - the white light is very common as the neurons are working overtime to get oxygen and nerve impulses to the suddenly paralyzed portions of the brain that are not responding as they should. The heaviness in the chest and inability to talk are the first symptoms of the lack of oxygen and is actually a built in mechanism so that you reserve the oxygen for the brain and its need to transfer neurological controls from one hemisphere to the other. I do not have strokes, but seizures can cause this same affect, as well as passing out. I do have syncope (passing out) and it is not uncommon for me to see white tracers as I am coming too and even as I am waking in the mornings or if I rapidly move my eyes - unfortunately the continuing loss of oxygen will eventually lead to a permanent description as you have given if you continue to have these and find no cause. My cause has been determined to be metal poisoning due to allergies to chlorine and aluminum. Needless to say my lifestyle is changing drastically!!

Gaah, I get this too every now and then. It won't happen for months and suddenly it's there, two or three times in one night. Even sleeping with my lights on won't stop it.
It's frightening because you can feel your heart beating, your mind is racing, you might even try to be talking to the "light" or "voices" but you can't move even a toe. The blanket feels like a million pounds and you're trapped until it lets go.
Sleep paralysis, that seems to explain it all, but really, it doesn't. I can understand being physically paralyzed. But why the crazy feeling of another being around you?
Anyway, glad to know I'm not alone!

This is called sleep paralysis. When the body is in REM sleep, the brain shuts off the functions that allow us to move willingly. When something causes a person to awaken abruptly from this state, they do not always regain control of their body immediately. Accompanying this phenomenon can be both auditory and visual hallucinations, the feeling of being crushed or rotated or floating. One man one claimed to have been dragged down the hall by little aliens holding him by his ankles. It's nothing serious or something to worry about, it just occurs randomly and is quite harmless. The main thing to remember is to stay calm and concentrate on getting your control back.

yeah! me too!!! My folks told me that it was a nightmare, like some bad spirit trying to possess your body but you woke up just in time and they had to let go of you,.Only then were you able to move. Often time , I tried screaming but no sound came out of my lung and my brother woke me up saying i was moaning!! Weird!!But I quickly forget all about it! nothing seriuos cause I don't believe in the supernatural!

sleep paralysis and hypnopompic hallucination. I've had them too a few times, very frightening if you don't know what it is.
Led to the myth of succubus and incubus...some people who think they;ve been abducted by aliens may have had them
