Can the F-35 supercruise?
How many air to air missiles can it carry? I heard a F-35 only carries 2 missiles and 2 bombs. I just wonder what can it do with only 2 missiles in a real air fight.
I know F-35s will mainly do air to ground jobs.

The F/A-22 Raptor is the one that can supercruise. I believe that it can do Mach 1.3 without afterburner.

As to the JSF weapon loadout, it will depend entirely upon what kind of weapons it is carrying. To preserve its stealth capability, everything will be carried internally. I believe the specs call for four AIM-7/AIM-120 radar guided missles or AIM-9 IR guided missles. In the age of the smart weapons, massive numbers are no longer needed, and can carry four 1000 pound guided munitions.

The secret of the JSF is that it will actually be three aircraft in one. The airforce will have a variant that will replace the F-16 family of aircraft. The Navy will have a variant that will fly off of carriers and eventually replace the single seat F-18 fighter squadrons, although that one is a long way off. The Marine Corps variant will be V/STOL (vertical/short take off/landing) to replaced the aging AV-8B Harrier. Fortunately for Marine attack squadrons, the system in the Harrier that requires the use of three throttles and a joystick will now be replaced by a computer controller. The theory behind the harrier was sound and admirable, but, unfortunately, the technology was lacking at the time of its inception.

The main thing I see is the short take off requirements. And 2 missiles generally means 2 - 1000 lb bombs as you noted its a air to ground attack air craft....those are some serious bombs for targets.

Perhaps you need to take note that the F-35 is planned to have this gizmo called the "Directed-energy weapon".

It is planned that the aircraft can shoot energy-beams at targets, the bombs and missiles are meant for more conventional purposes.

There are some aspects of the JSF that are still classified. A few of those things are maximum ordenance and actual flight performance.

apples to oranges. VincentL forgets that VTOL is yet ONE version of three interior of JSF mission. F35 easily beats raptor in words of fee, and challenge flexibility. somewhat, to dive into Vietnam era, that is like evaluating Delta Dagger to Skyhawk. diverse challenge, diverse criteria.
