This is a regular state of every animal... death. It's really hard but there are still a few steps that your cat will undergo:

1. The cat would stay somewhere, anywhere and rot on that very place.

2. It would attract insects, especially the bloodsuckers, to crop on its body.

3. It would be infected with a disease, luckily, when it is dead, it cannot experiece this gruesome episode.

4. Maggots would live inside its body from the eggs flies have hatched.

5. Weeks more, the remaining parts would be bones. This is called, "Decomposement", which means that has rotted in and out.

This painful experience can help your garden provide fertilizer which is to bury your pet. I know this would hurt for all but this is the proper way to love a pet, to bury it like a human would be buried.

God said to us, "From dust to live to dust to die again"

What happened was the tail was whats called degloved essentially skinned. and it died. As far as the maggots, yes all they eat is dead flesh even while still on live. but they will stop at live, effectively cleaning the wound or eating the dead end off. Bones could be a problem though. I recommend a good sharp pair of rose trimmers even now those could solve the whole problem. A quick flick of the hand problems gone.if the cat doesn't have septicemia you might get lucky. Looks like an excellent training opportunity. let me know.

Take it to a Vet.. If that's not possible then you should, First get rid of maggots by dipping them in flea control (dip, spray or shampoo)or dip it in peroxide, then scrub it gently with disinfectant soap and soak it in diluted Betidine (make it about the color of tea) 2-3 times a day for about 5-10 mins for 7 days putting some neosporin or antibiotic cream on it and wrap it about 3 days then just leave it unwrapped soaking it twice daily and keeping it clean and medicated. When starts to look good can stop putting on cream and just soak it once daily or every other day.

Have you taken this cat to a vet? Don't try any home remedies. They are specialists. That's what they are there for. I once had this dog who was really old and she got an infection and all she did was lay around and pee where she laid. She was actually my mom's dog and I was a teenager. My mom refused to take her to a vet. She had maggots living in her wound which was in her abdomen. She smelled really bad no matter how much I bathed her. Eventually she died and I was actually happy for her because she was suffering very much daily.

Take the cat to the local animal shelter, then book yourself into a mental institution.

I HAD THIS TO HAPPEN TO A DOG BUT IT DID NOT GO AS FAR TO GET MAGGOTS. IF ITS GOT GANGRENE THAT BAD ITS IN THE BLOOD AND ITS TO LATE.BUT IF NOT THEY WILL JUST CUT THE TAIL OFF USALLY AT THE BREAK.ANY WHICH WAY YOU NEED A VET. BUT BELIEVE IT OR NOT WHEN A CAT OR DOG BREAKS IT TAIL IT COMMON TO GET GANGRENE IN IT. THEY USALLY WONT HEAL.

Take the cat to a vet. Don't let it suffer.

Gross... take it to a Vet. Or take a butcher knife and slice it's tail completely off.
