People such as ‘whynotaskdon’ on Y! Answers keep quoting Verse 5, Chapter 9 of the Quran as proof that Islam promotes violence.
"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful."
[Al-Qur’an 9:5]

Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them.
For example, we know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.
Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:
"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."
[Al-Qur’an 9:6]

The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?
This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world.
Tell me now, is it fair that ISLAM is seen as ‘violent’ religion???

Islam forbids killing of innocent people. The Qur'an says:

“ … If anyone slew a person unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land it would be as if he slew the whole humanity: and if anyone saved a life it would be as if he saved the life of the whole humanity.” (Al-Qur'an 5:32)

Killing any innocent human being, whether Muslim or non-Muslim is not allowed in Islam. Even in the circumstances of war, this aspect is not to be ignored. The first caliph of Islam, Abu Bakr As-Siddique (R) is reported to have commanded Usama ibne Zaid (R):

“I command you to do ten things: you must not kill a woman or a child, or an elderly person; do not cut down trees, or vandalize homes, or wound a sheep or camel except if you must eat it; do not drown a palm tree, or burn it, do not be treacherous; do not be cowardly; and you will pass by people who have devoted themselves to monastery life: leave them alone with their devotions.” (Tarikh At-Tabari, V.3, p.210)

Thus killing

Islam does not promote violence. The Quran says that self defense is the only time when killing is allowed, but even then the Quran states that "eye for an eye." This does not mean that if they kill someone, you kill them: it means that you give them a punishment equal to what they inflicted on you. Meaning you dont over due the punishment.

The reason Islam is looked upon as a violent religion is because of the book called Hadith, which many Muslims beleive in alongside with the Quran. The Hadith contradicts the Quran, but for some reason many Muslims will never believe that you can have an Islam without Hadith. BTW, things like the headscarf and Al Qaeda come from the Hadith, and not the Quran.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Yes, it is a true statement that Muslims consider non-Muslims to be disbelievers. People are divided into two categories: A Mu’min (believer) and a disbeliever.

Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {He it is Who created you, then some of you are disbelievers and some of you are believers…..}[64:2].

To say that the creed of Muslims is to kill anyone who is not a Muslim, is not a correct statement. It is a fallacy that has befallen the Muslims.

Did you not read the Saying of Allah: {There is no compulsion in religion…..}[2:256]. The saying of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) when he sent the army “You will find people who have confined themselves to their cells (places of worship). Let them with what they have confined themselves to” i.e. do not harm them. [Reported by Baihaqi]

Did you not read the long history of Islam and Muslims? In fact it is not confirmed that they had obliged anyone to renounce his religion. The non-Muslim minorities in Muslim countries is an evidence to this fact.

As regards debating with others, we do not know any religion other than Islam that called to open debates and discussions and left freedom for evidence and proof to prevail.

Did you not read the verse of Allah: {….and argue with them in a way that is better…..}[16:125]. Allah further Says: {….Say: "Have you any knowledge (proof) that you can produce before us?…}[6:148]. Allah also Says (interpretation of meaning): {….Is there any ilâh (god) with Allâh? Say, "Bring forth your proofs, if you are truthful."}[27:64]. When debating, a Muslim is even prepared to say to the person he is debating with, what Allah Said in the Qur'an: {Say (O Muhammadto these polytheists, pagans, etc.) "You will not be asked about our sins, nor shall we be asked of what you do."}[34:25]. Allah also Says (interpretation of meaning): {…And verily, (either) we or you are rightly guided or in a plain error."}[34:24].

So, after all this, how can one say that a Muslim does not know anything but violence, killing and oppression.

This is a blasphemy by the enemies of Islam on Muslims despite the fact that they know well that Islam is a religion of debate and justice. They do that to prevent the people from the true religion of Allah.

They wrongly and strongly offend and insult the clear truth, and wrong and oppress the whole world as they hide the truth and deprive the people of the light and guidance of Muslims and Islam.

Allah knows best.

All ungodly religions can be traced back to the bastard son of Abraham. he had 2 sons, one was Isac who was the father of the Godly nations and the other was Ishmael who was the son to Abraham's maid. He was the father of the ungodly nations and it was foretold that the 2 would never get on together. Any religion which condones murder and war is not of God and they will be dealt with in the Lords own time. Always be wary of religions who claim to have had revelations and visions as they always claim that they were the only ones and amazingly, no one else ever sees the so called revelation. If you seek the truth, get yourself a King James Bible and study it out for yourself. Hope this helps!

"grrr", you seem to have taken a break from pedophilia to spam threads about Islam with your idiotic drivel. What are you, Crusader Man? Are you wearing your superhero outfit with the matching cape? Highly amusing.

And whynotaskdon seems to be blind. I've pointed about that the verse he keeps quoting is being used out of context, but he is like a pit bull charging forward straight into a brick wall. Unwilling to stop, but headed for a big collision with fate.

Read thru the bible, and see exactly how many people are supposed to be put to death. Everyone from homosexuals, to disobedient children, to those who work on the sabbath, to those with long hair, to anyone who is a non-believer. Great conversion techniques for the superstitious, but convieniently forgotten when its time to point fingers.
