She is almost 10 months old, and she has always been anxious. I assumed that she would calm down as she got older, but it has gotten worse. She used to just run away when she heard a strange noise, and now she barks like crazy.

If she hears a noise outside, she freaks out, starts barking, and runs to the window (or various windows) to see what it is.

This happens many times throughout the day. The only way I can calm her down is to pick her up and pet her. What can I do to make her more calm?

don't pick her up when she feels like that , that is pampering her . this behavior will get better if you walk her daily...at least 2x's. she has to know what those noises are thats she hearing. If she hears a car door slam, she'll bark because she doesn't reconize it, and she may think that someone is coming over . My dog does the same...he goes beserk when he hears things...kills my blinds...
but i open the window shades and let him look out to the neighborhood, and now he reconizes certian neighbors car sounds, the mailman, garbage truck...and daily walks will work off some stress. they need the out doors alot. It' like if we never left the house we get stressed out too. but remember never pick her up, that just encourages her to act that way.. and when she barks, you pick her up, it gives her attention, like she did something good.... i used to have to coax mine with a treat to get him from out the window...after went crazy in the window....when i walked out to see what was going on...he would automaticly go to his cookie jar......
A good dog show i watch id The dog whisper in discovery channel...that guy is a master at helping people with dogs....

I know you have a lot of answers and you may not like my suggestions but here goes. After three yrs of such behavior why would you be concerned or try to change him? I have two Jacks, one is a little skittish of noises like tea kettle whistle, smoke alarms, distant gun shots, fireworks. He is not a wimp for he will jump or stand up to any dog or critter, except to my 56lbs female Chow. I have another Jack that ain't afraid or bothered by any noise or dog. My Lab and Chow will run to me at the sound of fireworks or gun shots and hide under the bed when thundering. The point is just like people dogs have different personalities. I am sure he has good traits like mouser, protector etc The oldest Jack will jump/run at any sudden sound over his head or behind him. That is because being small his first survival reaction is to run at any potential of something landing on him. Then he looks back from a safe distance. Your Jack nor any pet should be in the kitchen during cooking anyway.

I also have dog and before few years i faced same problem but i came out of it.
U have to follow few things.
1) If u have a space then make your pupy free and let her do what she want.
2) take her out twice a day to show the world and to know the things.
3) She is very small just of 10 months, and she feels unsecure thats why she needs company, give her company and try to spend lots of time with her.
4) Dont just be with her, also play with her and give that things to her with which she like to play.
5) Most important thing is she is feeling unsecure thats y she is behaving like this, make her busy n follow d things which i told just now n see d difference.

You are describing my dog. I had the same situation.
Obedience Training helped a lot. It gave her more confidence and got her to trust me more. I learned how to train her without driving us both nuts. Now she has a nifty "off switch" and is much more calm and manageable.
I took the class at Petsmart. I really liked it. Most cities offer classes in the Parks and Recreation department. Call or go on the city website.
Good luck

Don't confort her when she gets all freaked out, you are actually reinforcing the behavior. It's like when a baby falls, they look at their mother for a reaction, it you act like its no big deal, so do they. make loud noises around her and be happy, she'll figure it out, but it is going to take a while.

Your doggy needs more socialization. Take her everywhere, dog parks, on errands, everywhere. Also, take her to obedience school, it may help.

Don't babay her if she acts scare. Don't get nervous when she acts nervous. If she scare of heater, take her to walk around the heater area and get her used it, don't say "its ok, poor baby..." ignore her fear and she will eventually get over it.
