Look up the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, they have the Golden Retriever personality in the small dog package. Great for kids because though they are still fairly small and in the toy group, they are not so small and fragile like a yorkie, chihuahua, or maltese, but they are sturdy enough and LOVE kids. This is just one of the few breeds. I'd love to have a CKCS. Personally, I think they're adorable. There's no such thing as a stranger to them. They love everyone and are so willing to please and be with the family. They are the "ultimate lap dogs" lol.
Here's a the ckcs club site.
http://www.ckcsc.org/
This is a good site for looking up dogs. They've put the dog breeds in categories here. There's a list of breeds that are known for being good with children.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/searchcategories.htm
Make sure you research the breed. Do NOT buy from a pet store, backyard breeder, or a puppy mill. You would be asking for an unhealthy, sickly pup and lots of trouble and heartbreak.
You can adopt a pet and save a life. Rescues will test the temperment of a dog, so they will know if they're good with kids. There are some great dogs that have just been dumped off by abusive or irresponsible owners. But if that's not for you, find a reputable breeder. They usually have lists on the offical club sites. If you have any more Q's, feel free to email me. stacey3453@yahoo.com
Really though, there are SOOO many breeds to choose from. Look through the lists and I'm sure you'll find one for your or his lifestyle.
Just had to add...White West Highland Terriers (Westies) are great too.

A small dog, not a girlie dog... For a 7-year-old...
Normally, I don't push my own breed much, because it may not be the best breed for everyone, but a Boston Terrier does seem a *possible* choice for you... They are naturals with children, and definitely *not* fluffy dogs. But, they do need special care, and I suggest you read up on the breed starndard to know for sure what the breed is expected to be.
They are energetic, playful, athletic, sweet, and intelligent, but sometimes very stubborn... They are generally great with children, though you will *still* want to meet the parents and make sure the puppy is right for you! Make sure the puppy is clear of genetic faults, no matter what breed you choose, and make sur that the breeder is very concerned with the temperament, health, and longevity of their dogs.
Read up about the Bossies here...

Ther are many of other breeds of smaller dogs that would fit your criteria as well. Check out the AKC site and see what's best for your nephew! Best of luck to you!

Get him a shelter mutt. They make fantastic pets.
The attendants at a shelter spend a lot of time with the dogs and get to know them well. They can find the perfect pet for your situation. Only problem, they will need permission from the kids parents as well as yours.
When you adopt you get lots of "extras" and you save a life.
Consider an adult. You won't have to guess what size he will end up, and a lot of the time the are already trained. (potty and obedience). They also seem more "grateful" because they know just how bad life can get.
Wow, you must be his favorite auntie. Anyway, you will be when you get him a dog.
Good Luck

Boston Terriers are the greatest dogs for kids..and believe me, they may be small, but they are not girlie! They are so loyal and loving. I grew up with them..I can remember as a kid, my Mom getting on to me about something..and my Boston, got between us, in a protective stance..I thought my Mom was gonna freak! Turns out..she was totally impressed with the way Toby was defending me. I still love Boston Terriers and have another now. He is almost 7 yrs old. Be mindful, they are energetic and very social..they LOVE and ADORE their humans! Ck out the website one of the other posters left on here..I think you will be pleased...

Beagle, perhaps, or some type of terrier, just make sure it is calm and not a nervous type, as they would be more likely to bite. Also make sure that the nephews' parents are cool with it, and that the nephew is capable of taking on the reponsibility.

Look into Pugs. They're small, rough and tumble, manly little brutes. They snuffle and snort, too. What little boy wouldn't want a dog that makes rude noises? Don't just run out and get one, though. Please ask his parents first. Too many "gifts" end up at the pound. If you all decide to get one, check with a Pug rescue group. The local ASPCA or pound can help locate the perfect pet pal, too.

a scruffy terrier mix .....
best bet ... go to your local shelters, and look at dogs there .... adopt one from a shelter..... usually they are sweet and even temptered, ask the workers about them.
Find out what breed mixes they are, and go do your hoomework first before getting them .. look up the breeds and see what the general temperament is. Mixed breeds dogs often have the best of each breed.
Read about beagles before getting one.... PLEASE
same with jack russels!!
