I have done the research on both cameras the Sony DSCH5 and the Kodak P712. I just don't know which one will be the best to buy, I know what options each has, but the reviews on each has its pros and cons. So if someone could help me to decide either Sony or Kodak.

I would get a Sony. Sony has extensive experience and expertise in computing and electronics, and Kodak has historically been more specialized to cameras. And since digital cameras interface with computers, televisions, and such, I'd just go with the Sony. More user-friendly and reliable across platforms, as it were.

These two cameras have very similar specifications. The Sony has been out for a bit so there are alot of good reviews on it (I mean reviews that involve tests by a professional photographer):

I haven't yet seen a comparable review of Kodak's camera but I can tell you that Kodak is not normally a good brand of digital camera to buy. They regularly are outperformed by other brands of cameras for the same type of camera. Their technology is inferior.

Canon makes the best cameras. However, they do not currently make a camera in the class of the H5. The closest they come is the Powershot S3 IS. This camera was comparable to the older version of the Sony camera, the DSC-H2. I'm sure that when Canon gets around to upgrading the S3 IS, it will be better than the Sony. However, they haven't done it yet and Sony makes good digital cameras across the board (I am however a bit dubious about their new dSLR camera, the A100 because they chose to use a CCD sensor instead of a CMOS....WTF is up with that).

Your best bet is to go with the Sony DSC-H5.

There do not seem to be any pro reviews of the P712 yet, so it is hard to get lab result comparisons. It is apparently a follow-on to the 850, which got good reviews (but not quite as strong as the Sony H1,H2,H5 or the Canon S2, S3).

But Kodak has been trying to catch up, so maybe the 712 will be the one.

I have the Sony H1, and am very happy with the results.

The Kodak P712 is just out this month. Can you wait a while until the pros have a chance to study it?

If you want to buy soon, I would go with the Sony (or Canon S3 IS), based on history. But all the cameras have relative strengths and weaknesses, so you will probably be satisfied with any of this class of camera.

Good Luck
