While I appreciate the obnoxious, sarcastic answers, my guess is that the numbers are listed in some sort of municipal directory of statistics that Yahoo Answers people may know about. Thanks!

Hizkid42 is right generally speaking.

The distance between avenues varies greatly, with the stretch between 5th and 6th being ridiculously long.

I think you mean Manhattan, as NYC means all 5 boroughs. If so, Manhattan is 13 square miles. With 20 short blocks per mile and 4 long blocks, you could estimate that one square mile is made up of 80 blocks, thus Manhattan has and estimated 1,040 blocks. I am sure it has many more as the formula doesn't work below Houston Street (which would be 0 Street if we were counting) and Broadway throws a wrench into things. There are also little in between streets like 4th Avenue and Vanderbilt that make more physical blocks. Then Grand Central takes up 2 long blocks and 3 short, and Central Park makes it yet more complex, so how do you count that?

good luck to you on this one....

I don't think there is any reference you can find for that. I am sure there is municipal reference somewhere, but you'll have a hard time finding it.

I don't have an exact answer for you and I've never been to NYC but the website listed below gives the following information. There is a link to a map of the city on the site also. Hope you find what you need.

The blocks between avenues (from 2nd Ave. to 3rd Ave., for example) are called long blocks. There are four long blocks in a mile. The blocks between streets (from 42nd St. to 43rd St., for example) are called short blocks. There are 20 short blocks per mile
