I'm doing a report on Vincent van Gogh for a summer project for school. Is it true that he cut off his ear because he attended an emo concert the night before?

It is amazing how the many versions of this story vary. The way I heard it was...Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin were lovers but Paul fell in love with a french prostitute. When Gaugin told Van Gogh that he was leaving him, Van Gogh drank him self into a stupor on absinthe. In a fit of depression, he cut off his left ear and sent it to the prostitute with the message
You have stolen my heart, you may as well have the rest of me too.

The truth finally comes out... It was actually a Cure concert. Vincent and Paul Gauguin were having dinner and talking about love or something like that. Paul disagreed with Vince and Vince grabbed a knife and chased Paul out into the snow covered landscape. In his anger and shame Vincent ran back inside the house and cut off part of his ear. It had more to do with his hatred of his father than for the love of a whore.

Ol' Vincent didn't actually cut off his whole ear. That's a myth. What he did do was cut off a chunk of it, from the earlobe to just under the ear canal opening. This part of the ear he sent to a woman who had rejected him.
Probably, as has been suggested here, Paris Hilton or al least someone from Paris, France or some floozie staying at the Hilton in Vincent's little hamlet.

Actually, I think van Gogh cut off his ear and gave it to his favorite prostitute as a gift. Now THAT sounds like something an emo kid would do... and then they'd go home and sit in the dark and write crappy songs about the whole experience.

no...from what i know, he had an infection of the ear and went through a primitive surgery of the ear. i can check and let you know in a while. till then, all the best with your project.

No, but it is true that he cut off his ear and sent it to his "true love" when he was drunk (or tripping) on Absinthe.
