I am in the 310 area. For the past few days, when dial 310 numbers (cell phones, without the area code) I get a bizarre ringing before the call finishes dialing (I am dialing from memory), and a message saying that I need to dial 1 +area code.

Has anyone else experienced this? What's going on?

There is a new area code 'overlay' that began 07/26. I forget the new code. Now, even when dialing within 310, you need to dial '1-310-" the number.

Maybe you're the only person who is not aware that they added an overlay to the 310 area code (instead of dividing it in two geographically) so new numbers will be assigned a new area code. That means you must use 10 digits to make ALL calls, even from 310 to 310. Get used to it.

I'm in 313 - Detroit - we have had to dial the area code for local calls for 5 or 6 years now. Too much # demand so they had to make the area code mandatory in order to assign #'s.
