If nothing else works, there is a locally available metal polish called Brasso, apply on the scratched surface and then buff with a clean soft cloth. Be sure to throughly clean the entire disc surface with a liquid detergent first though and test the disc after cleaning and drying. Use polish only as a last resort. BTW, if you got a DVD-RW drive take a backup of the disc using ISO Buster and burn the backup on a new blank using Nero, and treat the blank carefully this time.

Toothpaste is an abrasive material. Put a little on your finger, then rub it around the scratch. The large scratch should start to dissipate. (Don't be surprised if a lot of little minor scratches appear. They should not affect the disk.)

NOTE!! I HAVE NOT PERSONALLY TRIED THIS:
But there was a household tips and hints woman on the radio the other day who says that she accidentally stumbled across this in dealing with her kids scratched disk.

She said to rub it with peanut butter and it works great.

She has an email address that she invites people to contact her with questions like this, it is: householdsolutions@mts.net
her name is Reena Nerbas. Anyway, hope that helps. You may want to email her for further details just in case.

there's a stuff you can buy in CD shops called disc repair kit. It's like a putty that you rub onto the disc, and it enables the lazer to read through it. Works on DVD's too
