they use them to escape reality for awhile, if they only realized that their escape, from whatever their problems are, is very short lived that's why so many who begin using drugs, aside from the physical addiction, use them continuously

What a simple yet profound question! I feel I can answer this with enough authority, being that drugs have had a major impact on my life. I cannot speak on behalf of all the druggies out there, but I can say that for myself, the main reason was to ESCAPE my current "reality" and experience something new or in a different way. I can come up with many rationalizations which I feel drove me to use drugs as a method of distraction. But basically I can say I HAD NOTHING ELSE BETTER TO DO! I had no hobbies, I had very few friends who really cared about me, and a family disconnected from each other. So WHY NOT?? I've since changed most of that and no longer find the need to distract myself and self-medicate to simply experience that brief moment of fleeting joy I used to feel when taking a hit. I simply enjoy reality as it is. But don't get me wrong, it was hard as hell to stop!! It took support from friends and family, trips to meetings, and even a period of isolation. To answer the second part, YES, I do know how bad it is for me, my body, and those around me. I've researched my drug of choice thoroughly and quite frankly, I deem it as the WORST POSSIBLE DRUG OUT THERE, because of the fact that it is 100% MAN MADE!! And yet I continued to use it. In fact I remember bein on it WHILE READING THE ARTICLE!! As you can see, I'm clearly answering this FOR ME as a means to unload and haven't seen a shrink yet. HA! Did I even answer your question after all that?? Hope this helped...and if it didn't im sure you can come up with your own conclusion as to why "happiness in a hit" is so appealing to people...

They cannot cope with life. They might know it's bad but once they become addicted it's a disease. Then if they try to stop they believe they will die.

I think that we as humans know we are missing something spirtually out of life.
Using drugs is way of entering "another level".
Unknowingly, we are searching for something that we can not -as of yet - reach.
