Actually, they shouldn't be looking anywhere. Their eyes should be closed so they can see inside themselves and find ways to be better followers of God's words. Pray is a time of reflection, taken from the East's meditating practices. It is unfortunate most catholic congregations repeat their prayers like incantations or chants without truly listening to the words they're repeating. The bowing of the heads comes from the hierachy used to subdue the masses. It is very sad they did not take "we are all equal in the eyes of God" more seriously before they embarked on classifying the levels of faith: Bishop, Minister, Father, Brother, Sister, Pleb, Alterboy, etc, etc. If they truly looked to Jesus for guidance they'd see he did not control an army nor a following but acted as equals with whomever he was at the time. He even washed a poor woman's feet! Try seeing if any of those fancy clergy do that! Alas, religion has become a business in the Capatist nations of the West, and that will be their downfall (of the priests/religion and their following- not the West as a whole!).

the question is simple, is just a sign of respect. Not all christians do look down when they pray some might kneel down, or simply stay seated, or might stand up, this tells God how u look at him as a majestic master, yet u do not do it becuase you are scared of him or like you said you are looking at the devil for guidance. Is to show him respect for being the creator of earth and the most powerful being.

I'm so far down the list you probably won't read this, but it is a sign of submission. When a peasant encountered his Lord, he showed respect and submission by casting his eyes down. It was not proper for a commoner to meet the eyes of the Lord of the manor.
The praying hands is also a similiar thing. When a knight was commissioned by his lord, he would kneel before him, put his hands together and the lord would enclose the knight's hands with his own. The knight would swear to serve the lord and the lord would swear to take care of the knight's needs. And yes, the knight would bow his head to show submission and respect.

We look down because it is in deference to God, out of respect. Ashamed of being Christian, no way. The devil, you are joking. Checking out someone's rear, I think not. But I do think you had better watch your questions, you are insulting my beliefs and I don't take lightly to that. Consider yourself reported.

Are you for real? The first part of your question seemed legitimate then you just got rude.
For all who genuinely seek an answer to this question:
Not all Christian prayer is done with heads bowed. Praise and worshipping prayer is often made with arms raised high and head aimed upward. Thats a sign of accepting the power of God and His mercy into your life.
Bowing or kneeling in prayer is done in humble, submissive reverence to our Master, Father and Creator, God. Just as one might bow their head or kneel in front of a nations king, we bow and kneel to our only King, Jesus.
By saying that looking down is looking at the devil is a very narrow view. God created the Earth so a person looking down could be looking at Gods creation, bowing in respect or looking at digging a hole to China.

I don't know why I even entertain this with a response- the tone of your question reveals the level of intellect we are dealing with here , but for those that might be looking because they would genuinely like to know without being condescending or ignorant-
I look down , one to block out other distractions- if someone else is praying and I want to concentrate on what they are saying and be in agreement with them, I close my eyes or put my head down to avoid getting distracted by other things that might be going on around me- also to keep myself from being a distraction to others who are in prayer and worship
secondly, it is a sign of humility, remembering who it is that I am addressing and what manner He should be addressed

We look down because we humble ourselves before the almighty God.
But when you have a headache, you take an aspirin, although the aspirin goes down to your stomach the effects are felt up in your head.
Prayers work kind of the same way. God bless.

It's because they are speaking to the Lord and in the Bible they say they held their heads low in the presence of Christ for His Glory was so powerful that if you actually saw God your hair would turn to white.
They are following the words of the Bible. That's all.
